I wonder has anyone else come across this, coming home yesterday evening in the Mrs motor, the mil light started flashing although it drove fine, so this morning, not wanting to drag the lappy out decided to do the paper clip jobbie, shorted the two pins for a couple of seconds, nothing, thinking I might not have made connection did it again still no joy pulled the plug down more to get a better view and make sure I had a positive connection, still nothing, pushed the link in and left it in place great 55 flashing, so my earlier attempts cleared the code, damn, but now I am confused? so go to my motor and flash it for 2 seconds and lo and behold 55 flashing, so the upshot is Mk1 connect for 2 seconds, Mk2 connect and leave, :doh, Rick

You've not been using those paperclips with the rubber/plastic sheath around them have you :doh

Sounds like you didn't make contact right in order to red the MIL codes

No replicated it several times Mk1 2 seconds, Mk 2 permanent connection, what I am trying to say is if as I did others follow the book on a Mk2 then they will erase any codes without seeing them, so getting a false impression of no faults, I have two more MK2's and tomorrow will check them out, Rick

Got to admit Rick when I've done mine with the old paper clip in the past I've always done it for a few seconds and released and never had any issues

tbh i just use laptop now
its just easier for me
dont have to faff about counting flashes when theirs multiple codes,
then reset

Agreed that is what I have used in the past that is why I had not picked up on the problem, what I am saying is that we have been telling others to do it in a way that only applies to the Mk1 Mk2 owners will be clearing their faults without knowing it, so when we are saying check your codes they are coming back 55 all clear, Rick

i reckon its in the changeover period between the different models

lots of variations from 1998 to 2000

worked on quite a few trucks and there all different

some have roof bars, sunroofs, ABS, load sensing valves, map lights, different software,
even down to the pump and MAF and banjo filter, even locking systems on fob

consult 2 to 0bd 2 period was the big changeover

I guess its trial and error right?

The main dealers would just use the hugely expensive plug in diagnosis tool :doh

Definately a good spot though :thumb2

OK checked three motors today Mk 1 bridge and remove, Mrs Mk2 bridge and leave in place, Off road Mk2 (Mav) bridge and remove, so to get round accidentally erasing codes, bridge and leave in place if after a few seconds code start flashing great leave in place, if however it does not start flashing remove bridge and it should, I think this should be added to the start of the respective download, Banshee, are you there, Rick

Can't believe this hasn't been picked up before now, but how many people have owned both and used a paper clip on both ? I did it on my 98 swb but use ECUTalk and the lappy on my 2000 face lift so wouldn't have noticed either.
Nice spot Rick!:thumbs
