today while driving back from bradford, i noticed my temp gauge rising , normally its around the halfway mark regardless of going up hill or giving it some beans .. but it started to climb to 3 quarters , bymanaged to find a safe place to stop it had almost reached the red .......my bruv phil got out and had a look under the bonnet , but couldnt see any steam or water ... i restarted the car and noticed the temp was back to normal.... although on the way back home it did rise to 3 quarters....... once i got home i left it for a couple of hours , then went to have a look , couldnt see a leak , but when i checked the water in the rad and overflow tank ...... it needed 6 litres to top it up ...... any ideas ? couldnt see a leak . and iol filler cap seems normal :nenau

Viscous fan not being viscous ???

Was there a roar of the fan when she was hot?

it does sound like the water pump to me, the viscous is part of the pump assembly and the pump often has a small leak underneath and so only leaks when the engine is running and gets evaporated away by the heat of the engine beneath.

Whith a decent viscous the noise of the van cutting in and out is quite noticable :thumb2

after topping up the water ( 6 litres !! ) i waited a while and drove to brighouse town centre and back ... the needle hardly moved !! ..... have i fixed it ? ... hope so ... going back down to norfolk next week

how long/miles has it been since you topped it up last? could it have been missed during the engine change? or even just a loose jubilee clip on a pipe? It might be worth checking the obvious things forst then read my last post :thumbs

ive done 2050 miles since i got her back ... absolutely love this car ..... only ever topped up the coolant once about a week ago , and then only about a pint if that .... about half a litre of engine oil .... thats about it

if you have added 6 litres Pete, itll be ok for a while, perhaps you had an air lock, and its just cleared, thus circulating the coolant available in your coolant reservoir. Either that, or it is indeed leaking. my first thought would be water pump or thermostat. bear in mind that a leak is hard to spot due to the plate guards under the engine...simple thing is, keep some water handy whilst you figure it out...

6 litres is a lot tho innit ?

Water Pump all day long but you could remove the thermostate just incase as thats free ;)

My water pump gave up when i was out with Pete & Colin in the snow at Strata :( but atleast there was loads of water to fill it back up :augie :lol but jesus it was bloody freezing  :lol

done a few checks as suggested by my buddy .... fan is spinning ..... warm air is coming out of the vents.... needle is on quarter , but hasnt had a long run yet

Start ya motor
Take the rad cap off
If the water isn't moving, the pumps not working
If the is copper in the radiator, the bearings gone in the pump
Still say new water pump M8 :thumbs
