was fine untill i did a 70mph trip down the motorway, temp went 3/4 on the gauge, then i turned the heaters on, gauge sits around 1/2

if i go to work in the morn, will start to over heat again, so i turn the heaters on, but on the way home it dont do it,

this goes on every otherday

now on my way to town i noticed it was climbing again, so switched the heaters on, started to come back down, then all power loss and really really really thick black smoke, pulled over, popped the bonnet, the inletside intercooler pipe had popped off, but i noticed slight oil dribbling out of it, popped it back on drove home with the heaters on,

now iv taken the intercooler off and flushing that out, im also flushing the rad out,

the fan works fine, no oil in water, water in oil

need to get it fixed got a 150mile trip next week with a 1.5ton trailer

iv just noticed that i have two fans

the mechanical one, and the electric 'overheat' one,

the electric one has two relays, one is for the IC fan, A/c fan, rad fan two,
the other one says rad fan 1

now iv just noticed the air con, fuse has blown, seeing as both relays are linked, do you think its the fuse?

iv just taken the cover off rad fan relay 1, and touch the link fan fired stright up,

been for a drive, its ok if i fether the throttle,

its ok on boost, untill i come to a hill, then the temp starts to rise

just had it ticking over for 30mins, runs fine,

went for a drive, runs fine,

even try and tackle a hill the temp starts to rise,

got back home, tested the actuator (you never know) works fine,

on the + side i fixed the outdoor temp gauge

as i have said in a similar post, the terrano cooling system would appear to be very over rated for the uk climate, so you have a serious problem.

if operating the heater will control the overheating then the radiator is not disapating the heat for one reason or other, either it cant, or the hot water isnt reaching it...

First check for good circulation through the rad - feel all over it for cold spots, as best you can, and also that the thermostat is opening- it may be stuck closed.

If you are moving at any speed, the cooling fan will be superfluous, and if the rad is not actually disapating the heat then the fan will not be locking up -hence no roar- as it will not be sensing any heat coming through the rad...

Otherwise ...you may have a cracked head or head gasket problem...

yep if i turn the heaters on full the temp goes back to normal, but as soon as i hit a hill even with the heaters on, it starts to go up :(

Sounds like a thermostat might be sticking/stuck
If you look at your heater hoses they actually by pass the thermostat.

The inlet to the heater is on the engine side of the thermostat and the outlet is on the radiator side of the thermostat, so when you open the heater (turn it on) the water is actually going straight to the radiator for cooling down by passing the thermostat.
That's one theory

right just done the rad test,

only about 3 cm across the top is hot, the bottom is stone cold,

i took the bottom pipe off, cold water come out, then stopped, took the rad cap off and the hot water come out,

let it cool down, put the hose in, the water was comming out as fast as it was going in

Ten to one your thermostat isnt opening at all then - hence why it held the water in the rad with the lower hose off...

yep ordered a new one £15+ vat, just need to get it and fit it,

nissan wanted £75+vat lol

all fitted, bloody £80 in labour, took the garage 4 hours, what a bloody place to put it, right under the fuel pump,

butit dont seem to overheat now :)

Thermostat? no its in the top hose housing where it meets the cylinder head above the water pump...

Tim..

not on the patrol its not,

its runs from the bottom of the rad hose up to just under the fuel pump,

its still doing it only on hills,

its had a snuff test all clear,
new water pump,
new thermo,

looking at the belts there about to break, you think thats the problem? all thats left is the V bit the top bits gone and its covered in mud lol

Whats the condition of your air filter, if these are getting blocked, then they cause the engine to overheat, or could it be worth trying the hills without your snorkel fitted.
Is your snorkel facing forward?
is so: they can let make your airfilter damp, with choke and overheats your engine same as been blocked with dust.

Also is the winch you have fitted effecting airflow?
it could be bit of an acclumination of things.

just a few ideas, seen as you seem to have exhausted the cooling system of any faults.

We have a couple of skidsteer loaders at work they sometime overheat and it's alway the air filter blocked with grain dust.

umm its just got a std snorkel top, none of this fancy front facing thingys,

winch has been on there for atleast 9 months

alltho, how much oil should be in the inlet system

Dunno if you are still having overheating problems but having seen pics of your truck I wouldn't be surprised if you have blocked airflow to your radiator with mud :thumb2

having read this a couple of times i still think your rad could be blocked, is there anywhere you could take it to be tested, i had similar probs with another vehicle and before spending loads of money had rad checked and was told approx 40% of tubes were blocked, fitted new core, problem sorted. :nenau

Just a thought how accurate is your temperature gauge ?? If it is the manufacture needle with the old red for hot and green cold, my one use to be up and down and use to worry me when it went onto the red.

Try using a temperature dial gauge to see what the actual temperature is reading.

I found out it was only getting up to about 85 degrees which is about when the thermostat opens.
Should give you a better picture of what is going on.
