Hi all,I'm new to the forum,I hope you can help? I was stuck on a steep muddy incline for a good 2 hrs on and off whilst we dug out and inched forwards, anyway nearing the top as I was spinning and revving the motor went ballistic and was revving an revving,I thought throttle stuck,so turned ign off and still revving even when removed key!,so I stalled it,left a while started again with clouds of smoke blue/grey,finally got out checked oil,ok,water a bit low,but topped up and after a few miles it cleared and seems ok? Anyone else ever had or heard of this happening? Any help much appreciated, cheers

The only thing I can think of if the engine was drinking it's own oil some how & you caught it in time before run a way set in:doh What age is it & what engine do you have:augie

The engine has overrun!!!! You did well to save it :clap

The engine basically starts to run itself on its own engine oil  Only way to stop it is stall it or cover the air intake

Keep an eye on the oil level going forward!!

Were you in 4WD? How come you got stuck? Were all 4 wheels spinning?

Stuck

Thanks for your replies,it's a 2002,2.7tdi,135k,I was in 4wheel eve low ratio,it was my own fault too steep and too muddy, only way out was back where I'd bin!,it took 3hrs in total digging and inching up,I'm just gonna see how it runs next few days, how often do turbo,s go?,I just got all the oils changed on Friday an noticed it was slightly above top mark,so if the oil was at the back of engine is there any chance it could have got up a breather and into turbo?

There you go!!!! You've answered it yourself

If it's still above the max level mark on the dipstick, drain it quicksmart as next time you might not be so lucky

first check is the oil catcher thingy on the pipe from the rocker cover to the tubo, this can let oil into the turbo and cause run away, Rick

Good point Rick the one on my last T2 went faulty & by god did I have loads of oil in the intercooler:doh think the one on this truck is thinking about going the same way so need to find my old catch can & get it fitted at some stage just not sure if i'll vent to air again or plumb it back into the induction system:augie

Lucky bugger to stall that in 4wd low :clap

I suspect the engine got way too hot if you were stuck for 3 hours digging.

Hopefully no long term damage, do the checks as suggested, oil level must not be over! And check for oil where Rick (solarman) suggested :thumb2

What grade oil are you using?

Certainly do not exceed max oil level on dip stick.
I think you have this under control now, so keep an eye on it, and monitor your oil consumption, and look out for blue smoke.
I think you were very lucky, and yes, I would be interested to know too, how you were able to stall it... in low ratio... What gear were you in?
Either that, or you must have a fantastic handbrake:augie

Hi again,I notice oil all around the dipstick area and rocker but could,nt see where from?,what do I look for ?,an yeh I just put brakes an handbrake on so could not move!
