^^its almost impossible not to spill a little bit. The filter is pretty big so holds a fair amount itself, never mind what's left inside the engine waiting to pour out...!

When I had my 2.7, it used to drop quite a lot of oil when doing the (pig of a) filter, but I used to lay paper under the filter, which caught most of the oil can't say I noticed loads of smoke though.
No more dirty problems now I have the 3.0l though...did I mention how easy it is to change the filter :augie:augie:augie

mmmmmm....3.0l!! I have to admit, im looking for a new Terrano and im this (.) close to hanging on for one...!

:clap Consensus at the garage matches yours which was yes, oil spill@ filter change which they have now cleaned up... however;

Leaking coolant: Hmmm... because I'm new to older cars I did not realise it should not be in 4wd on roads for long and it felt safer as we towed our friend's very sick doped horse to emergency surgery first thing today ( colic & a twisted gut .... now out of surgery & still with us :) we ran it in 4wd for too long and my theory is it bust a coolant gasket.

Only a small one on the top so hopefully not an expensive learning !

hmm..yeah that's probably done it!! Your lucky if you haven't damaged the transmission as well tbh.

OK, on these, ONLY use 4x4 on slippery surfaces - rule of thumb - mud, snow, rain. The wheels NEED to slip ,otherwise you get transmission wind up. When you disengage 4x4, at some point, you need to make sure you reverse for about 1-2 meters to properly disengage the hubs.

Believe me, you don't need 4x4 engaged much with these, they are very good in two wheel drive as they are.:thumbs

Ahh you've been told about the 4wd which is good. I wouldn't of expected it to of blown a gasket though. More likely the garage replaced the coolant and the antifreeze has found a way out. Thermostat housing is at top of engine at the front with a big rubber hose attached and is held on to the engine with 3 bolts.

Also the water pumps tend to leak coolant but normally you get a small puddle just under the bumper.

Check the downloads section in quick links as there are several sections on water pump and thermostat so may help you recognise what the item is that's leaking.
