Hi guys,
Having some problems recently with steering -it seems to be stiff when turning left quite regularly. It seems like complete loss of power steering. Just thought I'd put a post up to see if anyone has experienced the same before I head straight in to try find the problem.
Thanks, TC

You checked the fluid level and power steering belt tension ?

My old 2.7 used to do this sometimes, normally when I had just started off, but only lasted a few seconds. Never got to the bottom of it:nenau

Check on the knuckle joint in the engine bay as it could be dry - A lot of WD 40 and some oil squirted on it and turn the sterring a few times and it should free off

If I have been enthusiastic with the hose pipe when washing the mav, water gets on the belts and it can happen for a about 1/2 a minute, until the belt dries.

I avoid over tightening the belts as it will put a strain on the pulley bearings.

Which reminds me, and I have posted this before, but if you hear a chatter chatter chatter sound coming from near the steering pump area it may not be the pump.
Carefully pour a cup a water over the drive belt, with the engine on tick over, stand back:doh and it usually stops, meaning it is only the belt.
Worried me the first time I heard it, but when it happens now, at least I know what it is.

Best regards,
Rustic

I haven't experienced it in my new Terry, but a good tip to remember :thumb2

Had this with my 96 terrano. the p/s fluid had gone a brownish red so drained off and renewed. been fine ever since

Sorry for late reply!

Belt is fine, plenty of fluid in there, but interesting post from sudd-will give that a try on the weekend as mine is looking a bit dirty. Will let you know how it goes!

Cheers, TC

OO just remembered, there's an adjusting screw and lock nut on top of the steering box. Has that been fiddled with? It's possible to over tighten it (as in taking out the slack in the box) which will effectively lock up the steering on the least worn lock. Just a though, could be worth checking it :thumbs
