Ok can someone humour me and tell this idea is crap.

Been looking at the way people have bigger wheels fitted , no offence but i think putting a little lip on looks a bit pants so how about spacing the arch from the inside.

ie

take the plastic arch off , cut a rubber sheet and bond it to the inside of the arch then attatch it back to the body work.

only thing I can find that might do the job is 18mm thick , recon that would be enough to go the next size up ?

Two things darwin;

(i) that stuff might be a bit too floppy....it looks like foam rubber as opposed to the stiffer foam board stuff (that they make display boards from etc..) that I know Extreme used.

(ii) not quite clear what you mean here - it sounds like instead of fixing, say, a three-inch strip to the inside edge of the wheel arch return, you are talking about just putting a bigger bit that covers the inner arch as well? Or have I got it wrong as usual?

PS, remember any protrusion of the tyre, desired or not, is a by-product of both the tyre width and the actual wheel offset, so you could fit 31's on a different jap 6-stud wheel that might have a different offset, looking meaner or more illegal, depending on how you view it LOL! Loadsa reference on here somewhere...

Avoid.

Remove plastic arch, add spacer, bolt plastic arch back on but spaced off by however much. Done right it could look a lot more original than some flappy thing sticking out.

ah with you now! so existing arch (by which I assume you mean the - usually silver - plastic trim bit actually?) effectively loves an inch or two further out, leaving a gap between it and the bodywork to fill?

im sure ive seen some stif rubber on ebay in diferent colours.

also beeing fixed to the inner arch lining will make them tougher too

Yep thats what I finally worked out Darwin....just thinking its best to use something dense like rubber, as an expanded foam type product would hold water for a very long time and potentially cause corrosion?

Excellent idea though...but just looking at the standard arch trim I can see why people have gone for the simple fix....I take it that we are talking here about moving the WHOLE wheel arch trim out, say two inches, in which case its going to stand proud of both the bumper and the front door tim isn't it? Can you make that look OK?

I would have a tendency to graduate the last 8" or so , last time i cut rubber i used a very fine blade on a jigsaw , you wont really see the finish especially as you would be covering it in tiger seal or similar to bond it to the arch.


only other option I could think of was to use 2" blocks at the top of the arch and .5" blocks in the bottom then tape it off and fill with expanding foam

as for the rust you could always treat the under arch area while you have it taken off.

Hmmm - this has ot me thinking - wonder if theres a bet way to do this, perhaps not as cheap but tidy and a bolt on arch maybe. Problem is theres so many different arches across the various years and models.

ok me and makeitfit had a good chat about proper arches for these trucks the ones that look like shogun surf extended arches, we had hoped to make some up
.

however the trouble is . until you have the wheels and tyre size you are really happy with and have set the running gear up to suit, its rather a waste of money and loads of work making arches for something your likely to change.
in the mean time you have to have arch extensions to be legal. remember 1 tyre is 3 points so you could get a ban for 4 tyres sticking out. thats why i used the foam board , im not keen on it but it serves a perpose , to be legal while i set it up

i think mine is about right now except rear dampers "mine are shot", so im down the breakers tomorrow to find something suitable.

totally rebuilt the steering , new bump stops, new suspension parts to the front end and several new bushes

then repaired the arches all round modifying the tubs to suit the big wheels.

now i have the wheels and tyre size im happy with and all the running gear is as it should be, im ready to build some dakar type arches (not the massive ones) just nice, but to look like they are made for the truck

If it's just for light off roading ie you don't want to risk damaging your motor then i'd go the fibre glass route. Might go this way when I fit 31's depending on how far the tyres come out with either spacers or offset rims:augiethinking of using shogun arches (like the style of them)with a bit of trimming here & there plus slight reshaping

i might hav missed a bit of the thread, but if you spaced the 'wings out' as per the original idea, wouldn't the doors hit them on the front edge when opening? unless you were a real wiz with body work and fabricated some custom wings?

Its a nice idea though like the old audi quatro coupe, wings 'bulged' front and back to avoid 'arch flares'

The idea is to space the plastic arch off the wing not the win off the body.
