Hi, Got troll problems. My oil pressure light is on but oil level OK by dipstick . How can I tell if their is oil being pumped round the engine so safe to drive or not. The question is ? Is it oil pump or oil pressure light ? Is there a way of checking with out taking it to the garage ? Any ideas
Cheers Paul .

Most likely the oil pressure switch, but you can't take the chance, but if you replace it, and the light goes out then problem solved, cheap fix, and cheap diagnosis.
:thumb2

Trol specific issue, your high pressure switch will have gone on the fitz. Bugger to replace due to access issues and most garages mistakenly replace the easily accessible low pressure switch so the issue stays. Simplest solution is to tee into the low pressure switch and fit an oil pressure gauge and ignore the light (that's what I did).

I've posted about it before and might even be covered in my project thread.

First day of ownership started it up and oil light stayed on, I remembered seeing something about a problem during my research, so had a look on line and discovered this is a common problem on Nissan and there is a fix kit out, unfortunately the fix kit is just over the £100 mark I think but it did solve the problem
It is some sort of timing issue I belive the test is start as normal ie turn key wait till pre heat goes out then start light comes on.
put key in and turn straight to start position no preheat light went out.
Try this and if that is the case my advice is get the kit.

Kind regards

Russell.

Thanks for your help and quick response . I went out to do as you stated Russell, I put the key in turned it waited for preheat light to go out then switched on just like normal and the oil pressure light went out! So probably intermittent fault and now I feel safe in driving it and will repeat test next time it stays on . Thanks for that.
I will ask the garage about putting a proper gauge in as you stated Barbeast. I've had a look at engine but don't know what I'm looking for so will do some more delving into your previous posts .
Thank you all.

mine was not intermitant every time I turned the key straight to start it went out but do it slowly and it staid on.

I belive the reason I never spotted this when I went to look at the car is that part of the sale conditions was that the garage service it unfortunately they put the most shit of oil in it and that seems to be what started the problem, have you changed oil recently.

Kind regards

Russell

Filter been changed recently ?

Has it had a recent oil filter change there are a few bad filters on the market that can cause problems like the Boschi one that Milner Off Road used to supply.

I use Nissan filters etc on mine, more expensive but worth for piece of mind.

Kind regards

I had the oil light come on, not long after I bought mine, checked on here and replaced the oil switch that sits on the drivers side of the engine, I went in through the O/S wheel arch, quite an easy job to do. Not sure if you can do this on the Trolls though.

Never had any problem with Milners filter myself (touch wood) though I have heard about others having problems.

Yeh... can't do that on the Trols. I've been able to unplug the high pressure one once with the sump guard off but its not easy. I've got a spare switch I'm going to earth using some spare wire and then leave the naff switch in situ and plug the earthed one in instead - will stop the light going on because of the dodgy switch but it should still work for the working pressure switch :thumb2

Since I asked for help I've been out in the Troll 4 times with no light coming on so that's good.
I have a bit of a running problem, don't know if related. I'll start at beginning .
This is a 05 auto 3ltr.
I had a wooow wooow noise when taking foot off accelerator. I thought turbo.
Took it to garage. They think gearbox as noise isn't there when in park or neutral . You get noise in drive,1st,2nd and reverse all when stationary (and when driving ). Told not that serious and to drive until gets lot worse.
Well done a few trips of maybe 100miles round trip , with no worsening.
Then it's half term and we were booked into a site with caravan. So we decided to go for it. 200 miles loaded towing 2 tone. Got there but didn't like the 20% Welsh Hill made a sound like a bag of bolts and it struggled.
Drove round the area a bit taking it easy but it still didn't like hills. So the RAC brought us back.
Went back to garage they said go to an automatic transmission specialist.
The automatic transmission specialist took it out while plugged into their diagnostic machine. The outcome was no problem according to machine but low, oil. They put 3/4 of a ltr in and it was pulling much better but they said noise is probably turbo . Was driving back thinking good cheep fix but about 5 miles it started to get sluggish then back to how it was. All the time the Wooow wooow noise is there.
Went back to garage he checks turbo but can't find anything . He put it on air line everything spinning fine. No blue smoke from exhaust .
Since then about 10 day's it's used 2ltr of engine oil in about 300 miles.
The automatic transmission oil is fine since the specialist topped up but that was checked the day before they had it.

So it hasn't had an oil or filter change but has had 2ltr top up of engine oil (shell) and its monitored daily.

It's cost well over £150 with nothing sorted and now the oil pressure sensor light .

2 Litres in 300 miles ?

That's a lot of oil to be using. I assume you have no oil leak from the engine so its either burning it by getting past the rings / valve guides or it is the Turbo that's my reasoning.

Have you checked the Turbo pipes for oil in them ?

No I haven't checked the turbo pipes myself, I assumed the garage would have.
But one should never assume.
I will have a go this afternoon.
There's no smoking or visible oil leaks, that's me looking, the garage man and the automatic transmission specialist.
I think I've got gremlins that like a pint of oil and sing the Wooow wooow song (their call to arms).
They are daring me not to stop accelerating.

Some one here had big problems with high engine oil consumption that went on ages. I remember reading the post but can't find it. Hopefully someone will be able to help.

Pat oil woes

I had a Mini Cooper S in the 60's and it would use a pint of oil every 100 miles - you never saw any blue smoke ! Replaced the valve seals - no difference.
Eventually had it re-bored and it improved slightly to 1 pint every 200 miles. Finally fitted a new BL short engine a few years later - no oil burnt between oil changes every 6k miles ?

None of my current vehicle use any oil at the moment. I think machining tollerances and oil technology has improved in the last 50 years.lol

I Had MK3 Cortina started to smoke so much James Bond would have been proud, tried everything even a recon engine but that changed nothing, eventually tracked it down to a vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold to the auto gearbox, the valve in the gearbox had failed and the engine was drinking gearbox oil. Expensive times.

My Patrol on the other hand 164000 miles and never uses any between changes (gearbox and engine)

Kind regards

Macabethiel turbo pipes

Hi checked the turbo pipes , the 2" pipe from the air filter to turbo and 2" pipe from turbo to cooler. Disconnected at turbo both oil dropping but not flowing . Engine cold just started to turn car round then turned off.
Is that how it should be?
Thank you all for your input.

Its now been a month with no more oil consumed...
The oil pressure light has only come on 3 times ....
so its all liveable.

The Wooo Woooooooooo noise.
Well the air conditioning made a racket when switched on so found the belt tensioner spring gone, so replaced the whole unit, couldn't get just the spring that would have to come from Portugal.
Also found the exhaust down pipe split so that was welded.
Now no Woooo Wooo noise. So hopefully everything is rosey its been good for a couple of days.
Cheers guys
