Ok hive mind help me think this one out I have recently bought Neil’s patrol and it has the oil light.

Now both switches have been changed and the resistor has been done too I’ve added some slick 50 additive to the oil too but to no avail the light is still there it only comes on at idle not when I tap the throttle or if I keep the revs over 1k
So my thoughts are do a oil and filter change see if this cures the issue maybe thicker oil may solve it.
It can’t be an electrical problem as sometimes it just stays on constant too I’m just not to sure where to go from here except just ground the wires and fit an oil pressure gauge or keep trouble shooting.

Also the resistor pack was located on the left hand side of the centre console. Not in the drivers foot well

Fit a mechanical gauge to test the oil pressure hot and cold then go from there to rule out the electrical side. If it really is that low then you may be looking at an engine rebuild.

It went to the garage before I sold it to Rob and had the oil pressure tested and the new switches fitted and all tested fine. This oil light issue started directly after I done a river crossing in Portugal

Could it be that something got wet and dirty in the river crossing and is possibly getting damp again changing the resistance?

I used it for 18 months after the light issue first happened and after that it was very random coming on when it felt like it, I am convinced it's a wiring issue of some sort as all the other possibilities have been addressed or tested prior to the sale

Is it muddy in the engine bay? A good steam clean and compressed air dry off, particularly in electrical connectors might help.

Yeah I will give it a good clean as Neil said it has all been pressure tested and all is fine so I will try giving a good clean and see what comes of it

Oil Filter

For the cost involved even if you leave the old engine oil in place I would start by changing the oil filter for a good quality brand,

My next thought would be the oil pressure relief valve seating - easiest start is the filter.

Sounds like the classic 3.0 oil light issue, basically the high oil pressure sensor (the one down near the starter) can't cope with the constant minor pressure fluctuations and so starts to give false readings to varying degrees.

When it started on my 3.0 I just fitted a pressure gauge and earthed the relevant sensor wire (can't remember which way round it goes but from memory only one of the switches is earthed in normal running, the other sits open).

Well I’m going to do a full service and see what comes of that I cleaned the engine bay today if this weather ever gets better I will have a look for the switches and maybe replace the lower one again failing that oil gauge is going in as there isn’t any other solution I cba looking at all the wires to see if there is a issue there although could use a amp meter I guess that would give a good indication if it’s a dud wire but with the fact it only comes on at idle it sounds more like the above that a switch is at fault

You just can’t beat a mechanical gauge for reliability, it beats the sensors and “it’s too late” switches hands down. An oil temperature gauge is nice too. :thumbs

So I’m thinking sump off and full oil and filter change with 15w-40 going back in???

I wouldn't be taking the sump off

Just get her up to temp and take the drain plug out :nenau

When changing the filter, it's a replaceable paper filter in a metal casing that gets you re-use. Don't unscrew the case fully, there's a drain tray right underneath it with a rubber pipe that you can position above the waste oil bucket. Just unscrew until the oil from the filter case starts to drain through the rubber pipe then leave it to finish draining.

Well I want to drop the sump because that’s what was recommended to me by my mechanic as well.

But on a odd one light was off this morning with it being colder but as soon as the oil heated up light was back on as normal but i don’t know if it was a coincidence it came on as I hit a massive puddle and the car lurched due to the size of the puddle so I’m thinking it could possibly be thrust washers [emoji848] or thrust bearing can’t remember what my mate said.

Much more likely a loose wire/bad connection, hitting a puddle is not an indicator of bearing problems, and I see no good reason for dropping the sump, this is a known issue withe the oil pressure switches, having only just got a 3 ltr I probably have this issue to come, Rick
