Im looking for any guidance on locating an oil leak. I have started to clean up the underside as best I can so I can hopefully spot where its from. I think its bottom left front side of the engine when facing the car. From above the sump and looking down from the top everything loooks relatively clean. Below looking up at the p/s pump area. I still need to work further back and have a clean aome areas but ive been rained off this evening. Any suspect areas I should be looking at? Or any tips on locating leaks in general. Thanks

That's a bit oily!!!!!!!

Hopefully it's a cheap fix, looks like it's higher up than the sump seal :nenau

I'm interested to work out where that's coming from so I'm going to go and get under mine with the torch :splif

So am I right in reading your first post that this is drivers side of the engine?

I've had two oil leaks in that side of the engine bay.

Most common and you are going to say no it's not but please check this one out. The injector leak off pipes, leaking diesel down the side of the engine. Picks up muck and I think the heat also changes the colour to resemble engine oil. You're going to tell me it's not diesel, check this option out.

Secondly a garage replaced the starter for me, they removed the dipstick pipe. The pipe has a bracket secured to the engine with one bolt which they missed off when refitting the dipstick tube. Trouble is this single bolt is also for the oil cooler, so miss a bolt from the oil cooler and it'll weep a little.

My money is still on the leak off pipes, you might have to remove the intercooler to inspect correctly though.

Good luck

So......

I've just been outside and checked my setup and I've got to admit looking at your pictures compared to mine, my money would be on the rubber leak off from pump to no1 injector.

If that's not the culprit then you could have a broken leaky pump like me :doh

Mine's eaten a pump seal due to running waste oil and straight vegetable oil, it's possible that this is the case here too as Panebeater did run this on Oil

Keep an eye on the thread below as I'll be doing a strip and rebuild (not a full one) of a Bosch VE Injector Pump soon as I have a spare from a low milage 98 scrapper I came across that I'll be fitting Viton seals onto and then replacing it for my knackered one.

Have you read the fault codes and are you getting any EML lights come on?

All you need is a trusty office paperclip bent into a special position and you can keep it in the business card tray in you're centre console should you need it again.

Match your flashes with the list and you've got you're fault.

Leaky leak-off pipes shouldn't give an EML though so looking the likeliest option at the moment

Here is a picture through the drivers side wheel arch (with 2" bodylift) looking at the top of the pump, the braided small diameter pipe you can see is the leak off from the no1 injector to the pump

I saw Clivvys leak and it turned out to be the blank off pipe on number 4, same symptoms.

Thanks for all the ideas n links. Going to get out there after work today and start checking all these areas out. Will keep you posted with some updates tonight. Thanks guys

So I had the intercooler off to check the leak off pipes. All seemed clean up top.

If the EML light is on then yeah there will be codes stored.

Looks like the Injector Pump could be leaking to me then

OK so nice pic of no 1 & 2 injector, but what about 3 & 4? particularly 4 as it has the blank rubber cap that fails, Rick

It's a long shot but your Power Steering Box could be spitting oil out from the shaft seal, have a check of it through the drivers wheel arch again

3rd and 4th are good. Maybe remnants from something in the past but its very dry now. Going to get a few bits out the way tomorrow to get at the ip and p/s.
