Oil Filter removal

Hi everyone,
I dread this time of year, because it's time to change my oil, I do it twice a year at about 2000 mls and the problem is "oil filter removal" it does not want to undo, when I replace it i do up hand tight, but when i come to change it it is solid and trying to get at it is a nightmare, there must be members out there that can tell me an easier way than I do it now.
I have to stand on a caravan step, which stands on an old carpet to save slipping to reach into the engine compartment and I get my filter remover which is a strap type and justs about slips between the filter and engine mounting and the block, I feed it up the filter to its strongest point and then try to undo it and most of the time it does not move, eventually I have to resort to tapping the top of the filter around with long big screwdriver and hammer to release the seal by which time the filter has distorted and even more difficult to remove, I have been known to punch a hole with the screwdriver to get it to move and I have tried various filter removal tools inc one that grips from under the filter but there is just no room.

If you start up the engine 1st to running temp it should come free easier :smile: I've got mine to do very soon & will be useing my big adjustable pump pliers :roll:

Must Admit I tooik the easy way out.

Took mine to A1 autocentre, think it cost about £30 - £35 for oil and filter, which I didn't think was too bad including the Semi synthetic oil. Although I did phone a few of their branches before I got that price.

It was fun though watching then try and get the filter off, must of taken them about 30-40mins to change it even on the ramps, they also spilled all of the oil out of the filter all over the floor so I was glad I hadn't attempted it myself.

Also had the added benefit of not having to dispose of the oil afterwards too.

Thanks for the replies so far, the sandpaper one I will try, I did a search on the subject but never saw that one.lol
as for paying someone else to change oil and filter, me thinks not and I save the oil to spray under the terrano once a year, which suppose is recycling.lol
and as for warming the engine up that makes sense "expansion" and all that, it's the thought of me burning myself somewhere and the cost of diesel, maybe i'll use that one as a last resort.

The engine oil will drain better if it's warmed up a bit :wink:

I dont know where exactly the oil filter is on the diesel but on the petrol it is a right pain too.
I remove the o/s front wheel and the rubber arch liner to see the filter. I use a 3 arm filter remover with a 10" long 1/2" drive extension and ratchet, comes off easy then.

yep its a swine to get off ,but i wonder if you are putting clean engine oil on the oil seal when you put a new one on ,it does help to free it off.
i have tried various types of strap but finnished up modifing one when i snapped the webbing strop i fitted a cycle chain to it and use a 1/2" drive extension bar .
ive also heard of removing the wheel and rubber cover to improve access.

i jack up the n/s just to open up the gap between the wheel and wheel arch but not lift the motor off the floor,remove the rubber inner arch flap and struggle away.the first time i changed it was a right pain due to the limited space and rubbish filter tool.i now use a small ratchet and strap.cut the strap so it goes around the filter and into the ratchet with a little extra.tighten up the ratchet until it is as tight as you can get it.grab the handle and twist(and hope)that it comes free. :| good luck.

tight oil filter

An old trick my Father taught me was to put a light smear of grease on the seal when you screw on the new filter and not to go mad when you tighten it up by hand.
Its a bit like when you replace a spark plug run it up until it starts to tighten on the washer and then go the extra quater turn.
Not turning it until it will not go any more by hand and your face is bright red!

Mine always come off without the need for a special tool of any kind. I agree with what others have said about doing it when the engine is warmish as it does help but not so warm that you end up with exhuast burns !

Thanks again for your replies, I am looking forward (not) to changing the filter this weekend and armed with the advice given will try a combination of the tips given and will report asap, if for any reason you don't hear from me is that nothing has worked and the step i'm standing on has slipped and banged my head on the front wing and rendered myself unconcious and woke up hours later with total memory loss.lol

Well as it's a nice day here I did my over due oil change :smile: I took the T2 for a blast up the road to pick up the oil & filter (2 mile round trip) I covered the front diff with a bin bag & an old T shirt which caught 95% of the oil spillage from the filter :smile: Oh * the filter came off no probs at all

Hi all,

Went to fetch caravan from it's undercover storage ready for monday and to warm engine for oil change, 12mls round trip, old rags on front axle and dropped the oil removed oil filter as per insructed using B&D 80grit carborundum endless belt turned inside out whilst standing on the caravan step which is on a piece of carpet and after a couple of goes, off it came and putting finger in the hole on the top of the filter extracted it from between various obstacles without spilling to much, but it was hot, replaced filter using a smear of the new synthetic oil as instructed and tightened it hand tight, then replaced sump plug and new washer from "milner" filled up with oil about 6 ltrs and will recheck tomorrow before we head off for Otley for three nights, thanks again for your tips and advice.
