Oil all over the turbo

Hi guys,
I was looking at a 2001 Navara yesterday, a bloke I know wants me to sell it for him. Whilst gathering advert info I popped the bonnet and to my horror saw thick black oil all over one side of the engine and especially around the turbo.
Im sure that he knows its a problem, but probably the type of guy who wont do anything about it till something stops working...

Any ideas what it could be and how serious?

Just wondering what im letting myself in for selling it for him...

Get that there steam cleaner round it clean it off. Then start the truck see if you can see any leaks Could just be a pipe or a gasget.If nothing could be the turbo on its way out. If so let him get rid of it. Its all about piece of mind

if their is something wrong with the truck, i let the owner sell it ....you dont want some one giving you ear ache for something which was not yours
