Can anyone recommend a decent gearbox oil additive? and tell me the benefits of using one. I am changing the oil at the weekend and have considered Molyslip, but the clubs old supplier (mrs.crewchief on ebay) won't answer my calls, texts or emails. :nenau

it's a manual box 2003

i was advised on here not to use molyslip as it affect syncro cones or summit. any way put it in and a week later drained and replaced.made gear selecting difficult especially first.when i drained oil which had been standing over night it was all frothed up and took ages to drain.

cheers Spudd, i do remember that, it was solarman who pointed it out if i remember correctly. :thumb2

hmmmm..... i put additive in mine when I did the oils a few months ago and have always struggled to engage 1st since !!! maybe I need to drain and refill with new???

i would drop it. use 75-90 semi syn.mine is perfect gear change now.

The original concept of Molyslip was that it was a 'sticky' lubricant, which would 'adhere' to bearing surfaces and continue to provide a degree of effect even if the main oil charge was lost. My old man always used it in small aircraft (for obvious reasons) in engines ranging from VWs and Subarus through to Rotax.

But that same property makes it unsuitable for a lot of applications such as automatic gearboxes, LSDs and overdrives, so I guess manual gearboxes can also be affected.....aircraft engines dont have such things of course.

molyslip is basically colloidal graphite in liquid form, it supposedly coats the bearing surfaces with super slip surface that stops wear, but in a manual box that relies on some friction on the clutch cones to provide syncromesh, it is bad news, Rick
