My big mistake-
I have searched for Terrano 2 compatible OBD readers, wrong I need a ZD30 reader! It is pretty obvious when I think about it :doh, the data comes from the ECU not the car. Having spent time and money (iCarsoft reader, numerous OBD2 interfaces and software) I decided to do some research

OBD began in the early 90's as a way to check on the car emissions (California I believe) this was Vehicle Make specific and limited in what data it collected and depth of diagnostic. OBD 2 appeared in the mid 90's to improve and standardise use, utilising the same 16 pin connector but reading a RS232 style stream on pin 7 (referred to as the K Line). The Maker specific lines on 12 and 13 may still used and the connector also allows for Can bus data to be shared.

To solve the problem

ZD30 pin out:-

As can be seen the ZD30 ECU does not provide a data on Pin 7.

I have trawled a lot of ZD30 ECU info (and Trolled :lol)
and have not found any part numbers that include the OBD 2 required pin therefore I have to revert to an OBD 1 solution.
Questions for the forum:

1. If I use NDS1 has anyone managed to interface the 16 pin connector, is so how?

2. If not does anyone know of a decent 14 pin adaptor I can brutalize into a 16 pin, or do I need to make my own using pins and silicone?

3. Are there solutions for Android and windows?

I have enjoyed finding this out I should exercise the brain more, unfortunately it is not as sharp as it was. As Homer said when you learn your brain fills up then when it is full if you learn something you have to lose something else. I am continually losing.

Make a brew and have a read in here.....

I've still not got to the bottom of it :doh

A lot has changed since I started that thread, namely the fact that I'm now an Electrical Engineer and I have to look at this stuff daily.

When my truck is back on the road, I think I'll revisit this.

I want to get whatever iteration of Consult is supported by the later trucks as the only thing that seems to come through here that we aren't able to fathom out is getting a truck going under it's own steam again after a NATS lockout.

I know that we can remove the NATS and get themk going again but I'd like to repair rather than remove

I wish Ray still popped his head in :(

UPDATE

All is not lost, Ray popped in last month :lol

Hopefully he sees this..................

HEY RAYYYYYYY :kissy

Still not sure.

Banshee congrats on becoming an Electrical Engineer, I have worked out it's been 46 years since I qualified , we had real electrics :D.

Comparing your pictures to the ones I submitted it appears that you have both pin 7 and pins 12/13, the OBD 2 serial line and the Consult pair. 20 years back I could have talked databus all day but as I have previously mentioned the brain is full and all that appears to have fallen out.

The crazy thing is that the 3.0 Lump came out as OBD2 was becoming the de-facto standard so why design the ECU to not talk:confused:. The drive for OBD standard was concern with emission control, this was becoming the hot topic in the late 90's.

It seems I will have to buy a windows laptop and wire in an adaptor for the NDS system.

I started a New thread as opposed to hijacking yours to bring any info up to date. On a further note, I noticed the majority of comments on your thread came from people with 2.7 in their signature. I am looking for a 2.7 to test my iCarsoft reader on.

I have been trying to find if any later ZD30 ECU interfaced with OBD2 but it is difficult to get the Pinout for each part number. I was hoping maybe a member of the Troll community might help as the engine had no major upgrade until 2007. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_ZD_engine

Anyone fitted the ZD30DDTT? This engine is based on the 2nd generation ZD30DDTI but features twin turbo charging, Euro VI, 130 kW (170 hp) at 2600 rpm, 540 N⋅m (400 lbf⋅ft) at 1400-2200 rpm. :bow

I'm certainly enjoying the new job and learning loads of skills on the tools that I'm then bringing back to my own troubleshooting and work on my own vehicles too, it's very satisfying.

I'm glad you had a flick through my ECUTalk thread :thumb2 You are right, my 2004 Commercial does seem to be a Frankenstein of OBDII and Consult based on the pinouts I have at the plugs, neither of which protocols I have been able to get to work :doh

I'd be interested to try iCarSoft out when my truck is back together.

The ZD30DDTI is the one they started to fit into the later Renault Masters wasn't it? :nenau

Good Info for DIY

Information for pinouts and interface cables:

https://pinoutguide.com/CarElectronics/nissan_consult_cable_pinout.shtml

This is a good website with lots of information on a variety of vehicles including ECU, Head units etc.

Banshee, what engine is in your 2004 Commercial? If ZD30 what is your ECU part number? I have been going through the various part numbers hoping to find a later model ECU that combines Consult with OBD2.
