hi all just thought i would call on the collective brains on here my T2 is fine its a problem with my citroen relay 2.2 hdi van thats proving a pain to trace, had it a year no problems i do short journies mostly in it, back and forth from my bike training site. any ways recently had to MOT it and it failed track rod and emmissions so replaced track rod gave it a service took it for a run and it passed now here is the crunch recently its been a bit smokey before and after the service from cold and when i rev it once its warmed up its ok when i serviced it i cleaned the maf and today went to have a look as to why its still smokey on start up well it seems i forgot to reconnect the electrical plug when i serviced it :doh the van drives the same with it connected or disconnected so does it look like the maf is dead?

thanks

I would say it looks that way what age is the van and do u know if it has the fap filter in the exhaust

looking like it

its an 04 plate van no idea about the fap in the exhaust? i know egr valves can cause a problem on these but logic is pointing at the maf seeing as it makes no difference connected or not local factors have one in stock tempted to just get it and fit it.

i did notice when it was freezing around xmas that it didnt smoke maybe because of the freezing conditions the maf sensor worked and now temps normal electrically its failing.

when i was an electronices engineer long long time ago we use to freeze micro chips and other compnents to find faults and heat them up again they worked when frozen didnt when warm so you can see my thinking

well so far

well the maf at the local factors was the wrong one have now tracked down some on internet less than half the factors price and same make to robbing buggers.

the curious thing is no engine warning lights come on even with it dissconnected and driving it connected or not it goes exactly the same maybe once iv fitted a new one i will noticed the difference

maf

can you remove the old maf and leave in your freezer over night then re fit and try???????????? roy:(

or i could

can you remove the old maf and leave in your freezer over night then re fit and try???????????? roy:(

that is an idea but i thought more about getting a can of freeze from me local maplins but opted for a new maf instead £38.50 bargin will post results 3 to 4 days delivery

That's cheap ! Where did you get it from ? I replaced the maf on my two litre Peugeot partner but it ran exactly the same afterwards, and with it disconnected, and no MIL lights came on. possibly they run on a default setting if maf disconnected ?

correct, its the same for all cars i believe-ecu chooses default set of codes for running, which usually results in slow, lack of power and poor fuel consumption etc. Although in saying that, on my Mazdas the default runing codes are actually really good!

not sure why the MiL hasnt popped up though, I would expect that, certainly with it unplugged, but then again I dont know much about Peugeots, they may think its not enough to cause alarm over!!

Surely a default setting would make it run, but not badly ? As you said, your Mazda ran ok, and I know my Peugeot runs ok without it, so I reckon the MAF is just there to enhance things or make things more efficient. A perfect MAF is doing it's job and increasing fuel economy and reducing emissions, disconnect it and the car is ok but not perfect, connect a bad MAF and it runs badly.
Where's the lightbulb smiley ?

no, the default settings cant possibly make it run as well as it should, but it will run, because it has no "live" data for the air flow it is recieving. Is the air hot, cold, what? No maf, it doesnt know. Thats why fuel economy and performance suffer.

no mil light

i only do short trips in it so dont really notice the poor fuel economy until now when iv made an effort to use the van a bit more often and done a few errands in it and a couple of longish trips and i can honestly say the fuel economy is poor, performance seems ok but when i fit the new maf im hoping its better it seems to rev and drive ok.

this is the place i found to get the maf from if it turns up lol have to wait and see. and defo no mil light it works cos its there when i turn on the ignition but goes out when the engine is started.
