I've just bought a 2.7tdi for spares as it will not start. Took it to my brothers until i can start stripping it but he now wants it if i can get it going. So this is what it does, I put key in ignition and a buzzer goes off, stops buzzing when engines turning over then buzzes again when i stop cranking it, Whats the 1st thing to look at?

Start with glow plugs and filters

If not heating up wil not start

also look and engine codes, there maybe some

first thing-NATs, could be the immobiliser kicking in.

Next, Ignition |Switch behind the barrel.

id start there. If its a case of it cranks, but doesnt start, then start checking the CODES that will no doubt be present. Check battery terminals are not cracked. Check the positive to the starter is tight and not broken. Check the earth straps are in place, clean and rust free (one sits under the water bottle).

Then, if it still doesnt start, id be checking the injectors are getting fuel, check the glow plug relay is working, and your glow plugs have power (although you could listen to the relay first job-if, upon putting the key into the ignition and turning on, but not starting, it doesnt click, then the relay isnt working)

good luck!

Take a vid if you can but does sound like NAT's to me from your description

One thing i forgot to mention when it turn the key as far as it goes the buzzing starts again and wont crank over but turn the key back a fraction it stops buzzing and engine turns over.

in that case, i lean more towards the ignition switch. And its a piss easy cheap fix.

more than likely, the switch is burnt out. Its a common problem. if you were to remove it and check it, you might find the answer. Get a spare and swap them.

That bit is a faulty ignition switch.

There are probably several faults, any one of which could have been introduced by someone trying to fix it.:doh

On My 97/98 T2 only after disconnecting Battery, thats the only time I ever heard the buzz noise after using Key must be something to do with NATS. ??

Yes the buzzing did start when i changed the battery as it was as flat as a fart, and thought that why there was no buzzing. So what are the NATS and how do i go about sorting it?

the buzzing will occur everyttime the battery is disconnected for a length of time. My Maverick is the same and it will probably stop (like mine does).

NATs is the immobiliser, I cant advise on how to fix that but someone on here will know, but its all to do with having the correct coded key-if you havent, it wont start. I doubt its the nats thats faulty, but you could buy a new immobiliser and key set, but i think youll be going down the wrong route.

Check the ignition switch first, if you have a spare even better. Its located behind the ignition barrel, which is clamped to the steering columm. Its a little black box, with i thnk one maybe two screws holding it in place. Its a bit awkward but still easy to remove. If its burnt out, or close to it, you will get no contact, and youll have the sort of issues you are getting.

try that first, ignore the buzzing for now.

Thanks for that on my day off I'll check the switch, had to put a new + battery terminal on cos that was a right mess so it could have burnt that out.

with the ignition switch being faulty, it is possible to fit a push start button so the key goes in and turns so NATS accepts it, then push the button. My mate had the same problem, the car sparky couldn't find a switch so fitted the button.

Hope you can get it going.... will be a great feeling when it's running and it's cost you nowt
