Hi. i was traveling back from Norfolk to Nottingham today and noticed that the gearbox has become very noisy in all gears except 4th!!! it sounds like there is no lubrication and the noise is like a whiring sound. is the box knackered or has it lost its oil??? If the oil is gone, where should i look to fix it?
I know the thrust bearing is worn and im planning on fitting a new clutch soon but i dont want to be fitting the knackered gearbox back to the car:confused:

2 words, layshaft bearings. My old gearbox did that, lasted about 20 thousand miles then pop. Make sure there's good oil in it as you say:thumb2

Layshaft bearings??? are these replaceable / repairable or should i source another gearbox. i dont want to get rid of the Mav as its still low mileage at 180500 miles ; )

noo  you won't need to get rid. i think you can replace them but it's just as easy to get another gearbox, the bearings are deep inside

Had this failed gearbox experience twice with T2s, it's a common fault.

First time I replaced the gearbox on my '96 2.7 with a reconditioned one. Box cost 750 quid and another 300 to swap them. Second time the duff box was re-built by the Nissan main dealer (and guaranteed) before I bought my current '03 3ltr.

Unless you're a whiz mechanic and have suitable facilities, I'd suggest getting a reconditioned/good second-hand one and finding a friendly garage that will change them, might be your best option.

Cheers for the info. Ive had a look underneath and oil has been leaking. But im assuming its not a case of repairing the leak, refilling with oil and off i go.... Anybody know where the best place to find a gearbox. ive looked at ebay but i dont (cant) want to spend hundreds on another knackered box.

Just collected a 2.4i with only 92k on the clock gearbox should be good at that mileage but will have to try it down the road to be sure.I know the 4x4 works just pulled a citroen c5 that i grounded yesterday which my fourtrak refused to move.Your welcome to try it yourself if you want.

This is the guy I got mine from - [email protected]. He lives near me in France but has a UK reconditioning/exchange source and imported one to France for me. Maybe cheaper for him to supply direct in the UK?

I put the box into neutral on the 4wd selector and then went through the gears as if i was driving. There was no noise. would this suggest that the transfer box is damaged or some other part

But there will be no load at all on the box if the transfer is in neutral

I have a similar problem but when in top (4th) gear there is no noise, this is because the drive chain is straight through, lay shaft's are not loaded but get noise in all other gears, Rick

Well having just had the same problem with the same symptoms I would put my money on the input shaft bearing. I had my gearbox fixed last week. The problem is apparently caused by the input bearing being above the oil line so it does not receive enough lubrication.
Though the noise had been getting worse for several years I had not spotted the fault due to the slow increase in noise but the bearing went very bad in 90 miles. Car is very, very much quieter with the repaired gearbox.
