Evening folks, new here and just bought my first Terrano, it's a 1993 2.7td auto

Top end is very tappy so I've had a delve through the tech help here which is awesome by the way! Found myself a guide to doing it http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/downloads/workshop/wk5.pdf

Before I get into it I have a couple of questions:

1 - The Mk1 engine is a TD27B as mentioned in the guide right?
2 - Adjusting the tappets should be done on a warm engine like normal?
3 - What type of gasket am I going to find under the rocker cover? Reusable or get a new one? Is RTV silicon needed?

If anyone could put me right on that I'd be grateful as I've got tomorrow only to do it before putting another 100 miles on her.

Scott

Gasket should be fine, do not bother with feelers, the rockers will most certainly have divots, just loosen the nut, turn the screw till it touches valve and back off quarter turn, and yes on a warm engine, Rick

What Rick said!!

Though I'm sure that was 3 questions not a couple.....

Where abouts are you, few of us in south west:)

Try changing the oil and refill with mineral oil rather than synthetic or semi. I can't believe how much quieter mine is at the top end, think it was Banshee that mentioned the difference quite a while back.

Nice one, thanks Rick :thumb2 Do I need some RTV silicon to seal it again after, only ask as I don't have any at home so will need to get some? What are the gaskets made from normally?

Haha good point! I'm down near Shepton Mallet

The oil was changed recently and I'm not sure what went in it but will definitely bear that in mind for next time, thanks. I'm expecting just adjusting the tappets to make alot of difference as it's pretty bad at the moment :doh

It is a molded rubber gasket and should be fine, no sticky or you will have to replace it next time, Rick

Tappets ?

Just in case the less mechanically minded read this post might be worth mentioning that the above applies when the appropriate rocker has the valve fully closed ! Won't go into firing order methods too verbose.

Worth mentioning that a 1993 Terrano with no soundproofing & the echo chamber (that is the gap between engine and hood) might just be the nature of the beast. It would not be the first time if I did a full tappet adjustment only to find all my efforts were in vain. I was a big fan of the old S.P.Q.R. tappet tool and even then could fail to shut the noise !

My late father always said that if you could hear the tappets at least you jnew the valves were actually closing.lol

Swear by it!!!!!! I did a stint with Semi Synth in Terrance and he was tapping like rain on a tin roof, drained it next oil change swapped for 10w 40 Mineral and it's bliss, I still have tappet noise that I believe to be a little louder than it should be but since I attempted to adjust the valve clearances on my Maverick and made it worse I've been a bit put off by the job.

I was going to get a set of feeler gauges but as Rick has pointed out if the valve stems have divots worn into them, using the manuals tolerance data you could make it worse, I think the general consensus is to wind in until touching and then back of 1/4 a turn or 1/2 a turn?

I'm not sure what I'm going to find at 163,000 miles on mine but I'll whip off the rocker, inspect and make a judgment call at that point :thumb2

I was going to inspect the underside of the bonnet today to see if it's possible to add some sound proofing. Any idea if the T1's have anything under the carpets?
