:eek::eek::eek::eek: you mean you had a Jeremy Clarksons favourite car??? oh dear!:augie

Which one? never take much notice of his recommendations.

The logics simple, a veyron is out of my price range and the car dealers in our family cant offer the discounts on it that they can on the ones he doesnt like

he always used to rip the pi55 out of the poor old Cav :)

With your foot off the clutch the thrust bearing isn’t spinning or in contact with the clutch pressure plate, so how can it make a noise?

In my experience the bearins making contact and the bearing is spinning freel, when the bearing is faulty the free spinning makes the noise. When you press the clutch you are putting the bearing under pressure which takes uo any freeplay in the bearing therefor no noise.

The car is making a chattering noise (gear box area) but only under the following circumstances.

When the clutch is let off.

although when the transfer box is in neutral and gearbox is in gear the noise varies in tone through the different gears.

Although the car quietens massively when the car is revved, whilst in neutral on the transfer box.

When my father in law owned the car the noise was very bad so we fitted a new clutch kit into it and the noise remained the same. I then bought the car and fitted the box out of my old mav ( that was not known to be noisey) to find the noise is still there just not as loud.

Have tried molyslip and multiglide to no joy

PLEASE GIVE M A SHINING LIGHT

It's the gearbox input shaft bearings - well known problem on these boxes - mine went exactly the same way you described - recon box sorted it out.

erm you are both replying to a post over 4 years old, Rick

But I am looking because although mine has been the same since I bought it seven years ago its now getting rather loud as I found out yesterday when I cimbed out of the cab with engine still running bri

some say if the thrust bearing is bolloxd it makes a noise when you dip the clutch, while others including at least one auto mechanic on here (and me) think its noisy with your foot off the clutch....and if you Google the subject, you find the same two camps...who the hell is right???:confused::confused:

Depends on the type of bearing. A knackered roller bearing is likely to be noisier under load, whereas a knackered taper bearing will more often be quieter under load. Both scenarios can be right, depending on which type of bearing is fitted :thumb2

Just proves how wrong he can be :thumbs

Mind you with a vauxhall main dealer as a relative I haven't owned one since the mid 90's. mainly because I never liked the vectras.

Did you know that his family owned "Kilner jars" a preserving jar company, to hold and preserve fruit etc in, so no wonder he knows nowt about cars.
