hello all, recently bought a C reg nissan terrano 2.7 Td and have noticed a noise (creaking/grinding) coming from the area of the rear wheels/driveshaft when I'm turning left or right (very noticeable when i'm reversing with the window wound down). Does this ring any bells with anyone? What might it be? Thanks, Rob S

Are you 100% sure it's from the rear? The steering lock stops on the front (obviously) wear down to the metal and make an all mighty noise like you wouldn't believe!

Remember being a C reg it’s not an R20 assuming it is not a private reg of course.
Not sure how any other models compare mechanically to the R20

When I say C reg it has CN at the beginning of the reg, I thin its from 2004 from memory. Its practically identical to the Y reg it replaced. Pretty sure the noise is coming from the rear, i've had the knocking noise from the steering stops on another one so would recognise that.

As it will have the later diff I will still go with simply change the oil, Rick

Ok, thanks for the tip i'll give that a go.
Can anyone recommend tools for changing the rear diff oil? (removing the filler&drain plugs, filling the awkwardly positioned filler plug-hole)

Hi,
Not sure of tools, but check you can get that filler plug undone before you undo the drain plug, you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle if you don't.

Good luck.
