Noise from passenger side - ATP related?

Now please excuse my ignorance to the 4x4 systems here as they are probably completely different but as Rick mentioned Transfer Box on a previous thread and the guy in the link below seems to have had similar symptoms on a X-trail I thought I would chip in with it.

http://www.nissanforums.com/x-trail/157484-ticking-noise-front-drive-shaft.html

Could they of messed with anything during the MOT.

Thank you. Yeah, thought MOT might have been a trigger but as it was about a week when this started since MOT so not too sure.

This Xtrail's issue might sound similar but I feel it's a different as this "ticking" noise is definitely coming from where near from inside of cabin and it doesn't disappear even when noise from outside is louder as it's "ticking" as if it's inside.

Jim, thanks. Will see the area of cabin filter.

Rick, does it? I think it's not a rattle from the engine. It's so sharp sound as if two metal fan hitting each other.

Does operating the aircon switch make the sound any different ?

I checked your point but it doesn't change.

ATP light and noise act roughly like this;

[When parking]
Transfer box: 2H, 4H, 4L - Gear: P
- ATP light flickers and the noise synchronises with ATP light

Transfer box: N - Gear: P
- ATP light off, no noise

Transfer box: 2H - Gear:N, No acceleration
- ATP light off, but intermittent noise

Transfer box: 2H - Gear: D/2/1 with sidebrake on, No acceleration
- ATP light off, almost no noise

[When driving]
Transfer box: 2H - Gear: D/2/1 with acceleration (with pedal)
- ATP light off, no noise

Transfer box: 2H - Gear: D/2/1 without acceleration
- ATP light off, intermittent noise

Transfer box: 2H - Gear: D/2/1 with brake on (e.g. stopping at the traffic light|)
- ATP light off, almost no noise

I will check the front passenger side from now....

Sounds daft I know but check your ATF level and condition from it's dip stick. Should be a nice red and sweet smelling but if it's turning brown and smells burnt then change it. Just wondered if low ATF level or old ATF would cause it.

Having seen your post 23, could this noise be a chatering relay? it does not sound like it on your recording but sounds can change, other than that it does sound like the transfer box is not engageing properly or another posibility is the spring that pulls the selector out of 4 wheel has broken and the gear is chattering, if you drive in 4 wheel for a short while does it do it? Rick

Is it the dip stick on the left hand side of the engine (the other one apart from the engine oil)?

Rick, I drove in 4 wheels for a while and in short the noise didn't change - I realise the green truck light was flickering, at some point it was off whilst the noise was going on before coming back to flickering. This does indicate this noise is something to do with the transfer box?

If I remeber right it's the dipstick near the bulkhead at the drivers side. So probably the one you're talking about.

auto oil level needs to be checked when oil is hot after a run not when cold the dipstick is the one nearest the bulkhead of the two if i remember correctly is there not a bunch of relays & control boxes by the front of the passengers door behind the plastic kick panel could be moisture has got to them i do think it is a noisy relay control box

It might have been but if in 4wheel the noise is still there then sort of rules out box, think I will go with relays as it stands at the moment, Rick

Jim, RJL Services, I haven't been able to check the oil level yet as I was on business trip. Now I spoke to the garage who told me they'd check ECU to find out what it says. Although this garage said he didn't have software, he contacted a couple of other garages and will tell me if any other garage can check.

If ATP light is flickering, do you think it would be something more clear if you check the error code? I haven't decided if I'd pay to repair this, but would like to see how much it'd cost.

RJL Services, when you say "a noisy relay control box", is it "by the front of the passengers door behind the plastic kick panel"? I'm not sure exactly where I should check and would appreciate if you could tell me a bit more about this.

Rick, I have tested all 2H, 4H, 4L - the only position that didn't make noise was "N" on transfer box. It becomes more louder and constant when I reverse the car. I hope it's not the transfer box related, but just relay,

there are a bunch of relays behind the passenger foot well plastic panel one screw under a round plastic disc and the door trim local and it is off, with a passenger in the car they can then touch each of the relays to try and identify it, Rick

Hi Rick, passenger foot well = removing the carpet on the floor for a front passenger side?

No need to remove carpet, just the plastic panel on the left of the foot well, Rick

IIRC, when I had mine off there was only 2 relays in there one for the alarm and one for something else but mines not an auto :nenau

Thanks, Rick.

Banshee, yes, I imagine most of people here have manual and even Rick told me it's rare for him to drive Terrano Auto (or was it for the first time?:lol)

I'm hoping to have time today or tomorrow to check relays opening up the panel. But then I'm not too confident if I can handle if I can spot where the sound is coming from. Also I will need to check oil level that Jim advised. I'm not so confident to keep driving it when it's making this piercing sound most of the time, so for Christmas driving I might need to insure my Scenic again to use (before quick repair slow puncture as well as flat battery)...:doh

Dude get a passenger in with it and get them to take a video of the noise as you are driving and get as close to the source as possible.

Do you know how to post videos? If not we'll figure that one out when you've done it.

Screwdriver!

No not calling you one but you might be able to identify the relay. Basically put the blade of the screwdriver on the relays in tuen and put your ear against the handle. The noise travels up the screwdriver :thumbs

Thank you, Rick. Just to make sure, this is the one, right?

Surely the sound is actually coming from this area.

So I couldn't record when I drive, Banshee....

But I found something interesting. If I push the lever for transfer box from passenger to driver side, this noise+ATP light when the gear is in P, disappear. If I push the lever from driver side to passenger side, noise continues. Strange but appears to be something connection or the issue with the transfer oil/transfer box? (I have no idea though, the relation between the relays and this lever. )

It was dark but I recorded this anyway for you to have a look;

Any suggestion, welcome!:bow

yes thats the panel if the noise goes when moving stick could be bad connection under the gear stick due to dirt etc worth checking just a thought:thumb2
