No throttle at start

I was away and friend went to borrow my 95 2.7TD. Yes he is mechanically inept but.... Tried to start but wouldn't run.

I just got back and tried myself. It turns over and fires but can barely idle.

Glow plugs are all new ready for winter, glow light goes off etc. Throttle cable is OK

Even with the manual 'choke' out it won't stay running - coughs & splutters around 500 rpm and eventually dies as you cannot rev it.

Tank not empty, primer is pressure up.

Just suddenly thought - not taken the banjo filter out in ages but hadn't noticed any loss in performance recently, so it would be a surprise.

Any other thoughts?

Take the banjo off from the rear of the pump and screw the bolt back in a couple of turns, operating the primer pump you should get a fine jet of fuel, if not filters need looking at, Rick

Is the rear of the pump at the front of the car? I have removed it in the past. Down behind the power steering pump I think?

I'll whip it out and check for starters. Could be that or the fuel filter, but it was working perfectly only a week or so before he laid his f**k fingers on it ;-)

Well, the little banjo filter was grubby but not impermeable.

So, I couldn't get to the banjo at the back. Think I need my remote camera to have a look to suss access

As an experiment I went to the fuel filter, cracked the rear banjo, and managed to get the primer to move - it was either very stiff or under pressure - and got a bit of fuel squeezed out.

Did it up, turned her over and it was still the same. Pushed primer several times (sounded a bit 'airy') and she fired up. If I left the primer alone she stopped.

Turned her over and kept priming for a bit as she ran, and after a minute or so she ended up running sweet.

Gauge currently says about 8th of a tank. Hmmmm.

My wife did almost run it out of fuel several months ago (when I first found out about the primer!) ago but performance seemed to be ok on the motorway.

Might change the main fuel filter as a precaution. Any other thoughts?

You really need to remove the return banjo, if that orifice is clogged then it will start but not rev as the pump will be over pressured, Rick

If you had some dirt as far forward as the banjo filter, I'd say that it would be sensible to get inside your tank and check the swirl chamber for debris...

I've had this before on a Ford Maverick, this would have happened to me because I used to fill the truck up with cleaned WVO (waste vegetable oil) I use a funnel attached to a piece of metal exhaust flexi that supports itself via the filler neck. My moms driveway was quite tight and I think I've brushed past the dead conifers and it's dropped into the funnel and then into the tank.

I think you're confusing threads Rick, this is a 2.7 we're looking at here

OK but the pic in post 12 is not a UK style VE pump return banjo, so can only guess that his has a different top body, on all the 2.7s I have seen the banjo bolt is horizontal, no stop there I could be wrong maybe I am thinking Patrol, whatever it makes little difference, it needs to be removed and tested to make sure the orifice is clear in the bolt, Rick

Yes this is horizontal on the back of the pump - but I took it with my poky hole camera so it is at odd angles!

I'll get another to show more clearly.

On looking at that pic again it looks like you have a wire on the top, indicating a solenoid, I have never seen one like this before, as it is a 95 I wonder if it is a solenoid valved return control, it would be worth checking the resistance of this with an Ohm meter because if it has failed this would be your problem, Rick

Few more pics. The other day she was haemorrhaging fuel.

We have had drips on and off before and my mechanic mate said he though it may be the seals in the pump?

But the other day it was a load, and then by the time I drove a kilometre home, it had stopped a bit of residue but no gush.... very odd. Possibly all connected.

This pump did have bio (or other) fuel through it once about 10 years back when they delivered the wrong fuel to the local petrol station!

Going to attach a few pump views when I was trying to find the leak.

Ideas appreciated!
