I have a 2001 Nissan terrano 2.7td and i have just noticed that i have no rear lights but i have brake lights and indicators. Also the dashboard now doesnt light up when i turn the lights on. Does anybody know what could be the problem.

Take both back light units out and look for damage to the wire insulation where it may have been rubbing against the chassis. This will cause the fuse under the bonnet to blow and no back lights.

Do you have a tow bar and electrics, if so the tow bar electrics could be causing the problem, Rick

after being flashed and shouted at by lots of other motorsists I found out my rear lights have stopped working.
Checked the fuse this morning and its fine, will have to take the lights off over the weekend and have a more detailed investigation, will be back if I have any issues to gain some valuable help from all you experts.

This year I bought a second hand rear bumper light cluster, it came with the bulb holders and short length of loom with the connector on. A previous owner had scotchlocked tow bar wiring on to the cables behind the lights. I could well imagine that if this is done the cables will rot through where the scotchlocks break through the insulation and let the water and muck in to the bare copper.

I have also heard of water in the towbar socket shorting cables out too.

Dont forget it might simply be bulbs blown.

Best of luck

I will check the bulbs first but imagine it would be strange for them both to go, I have a tow bar fitted so hope I dont have to start pulling all the loom apart.
Think I might find out how to use my multimeter this weekend.

Although you dont need to remove the rear bumper lights to change bulbs its easier to remove them for the sake of 4 screews and youll also be able to check to see if the tow bar has been wired into the loom behind the lamps.
