switch cannot be on the lever, it must be on the selector as you can move the lever out of 4WD stationary and the light stays on till you have shunted a bit in order to take the load off to allow it to disengage, Rick

+1 :thumb2

@Kamsin....the simplest way by a country mile to check if you have 4WD is as follows:

1. make sure you are in 2WD (reverse to disengage hubs and extinguish light). then reverse round a tight radius in either direction and there should be no drama.

2. Stick it in 4WD and repeat the manoeuvre...you should immediately experience transmission windup and feel the tyres trying to skip and hop to release it.

If thats what happens then you have working 4WD.

If theres no drama again, then you have a mechanical problem.:thumb2

Right, had the car in the air, 4WD working as it should right up too the wheels, so this now indicates its the hubs. Im now going to start to take them apart one by one (Im going to do both) and see if i can see whats wrong. I will keep you posted. I may even take photos as i go!:thumb2

down load section has a step by step... take a peep

Yes Yes andYES I have 4 WD again..........:thumb2

Well i say that, i have not tested it fully but, front wheels in the air, turn front prop and nothing happens:nenau. 1 hr under car later with spaners and white spirit and a good dose of copper coat then, wheels in the air, turn the prop and the wheels go round, drop car to floor turn prop, it wont turn YES YES YES, FIXED Yippy:clap I did take some pics and will post them soon.

Thank you to you all for your help, this really is an easy fix once you know what your doing.:augie i now consider my self an EXPERT on stripping hubs and making them work:lol

Right, while im on a roll, im going back out to look at the non powered mirrors and find out where the power is failing....

Oh im so happy right now!:clap

what did you do under the car ? or was that a figure of speech ?

Well i was under the car if you count the wheel arch's and lying on the floor to turn the prop. Other than that though a guess i was more at the side of the car.

Get the picks poasted as soon as camera has charged back up!

Ok, first thing to notice is, this is for a 97 TDI Maverick. There are two extra bits on this modle compared to the break down of the one in the download section for the 95 Mistral. A spring style washer (looks like part of a slinky) and a locking ring that holds the slinky spring in place.:thumbs

(Click the image for a larger view)

First remove the wheel, exposing the hub. the hub will need the 6 alen key bolts removing, they should not be too tight.

Once removed you will be able to prise the hub away from the wheel disk, i used a rubber mallet to break the seal, but dont hit it too hard, you dont need too.:naughty

Next clean the whole thing in white spirts, dont start removing anything till you can see where it needs to go back. (Taking photos help in case you forget). :thumbs

The locking ring the holds in the slinky spring is the first part to remove, it just turns 1/4 turn and pops off, then remove Mr Slinky. the rest is as decribed in the download section. Take it all to bits and clean. Watch out for the last part that comes out, its full of ball bearings, they do fall out if your not careful.:doh

Once clean, "DRY EVERYTHING" dont leave white spirt on anything or it will break down the coper grease.:doh

Make sure its CLEAN, then start coating with coper coat as you rebuild it, but not too much, you dont want it to get gobbed up again..:augie

If your unsure of doing this, DONT BE! its a really easy fix and can be done in about 1 hour. Ontop of that, there aint to much you can do wrong! even if you think its put back together wrong, dont worry if you do it WONT go back together, just look whats holding it apart and start again.

To be honest, i really enjoyed doing this, i think its taken more working out trying to post it on here than doing the job.:D

The locking ring is actually called a brake ring (or snap ring by some people :augie) that makes the 4wd drive work by locking on to the inner brake ring. The spring is what pushes it into place.
I've never seen one that stripped down before :eek

If your going to take it to bit's, do it in style. Take it all to bits! LOL

i can only see one pic.. any one else haveing the same troubles?

i can see all 4 piccies ...... perhaps you are putting something other than tea in your cup ? :naughty
