Hi guys after reading just about everything that has been posted on here as a "New member" unpaid account :augie. i have decided to pay the £10 and get in on the action myself :D, as you all seam to know what your talking about on here (Unlike some fourms).

Anyway, back to the post, i have just got myself a Maverick, due to the fact my dad has a Terrano and a pathfinder and after driving them, had to get my own :thumb2. But alas it has no front wheel drive:doh.

I have it booked in tomorrow at a friends garage to get it in the air and have a good look round it and i have seen loads of stuff on here about the hubs not locking in, how to strip them down and clean them. BUT what if i find out its not them? It will go in to 2H, 4H and 4L ok with the stick but i dont get the light on the dash board.(i dont get it when i start the car either so it could be the bulb has gone). I think its got Auto hubs as there is nowhere to lock them in on the wheels.

I have tried the driving forward, driving backwards, bunny hopping and 180s, ok i was joking about the last two, but i have done what i have been told. i took it on to a dirt lane yesterday and attempted to drive over a dirt mound only to have the rear drivers side wheel spin when the front was in the air (On the mound, not in the air free wheeling).
ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER WOULD BE FANTASTIC:bow.

It mayhelp to know it a 97 "P" reg 2.7 diesel.

barring a blown bulb .... if the light isnt on , you arent in 4wd , so you wont have drive to the front hubs , things to check ... bulb obviously... and transfer box fluid.....some others will advise too

The way i check that the transfer box is working is jack the back up so both rear wheels are off the ground then put it in 4x4 1st gear gently lift the clutch if it doesnt try to go forward you can get out and check if the front prop is turning that will tell you if its the transfer box or the hubs.this method should only be done off road so if something does engage you dont hit someone or get someone to check the prop with you still in the car if the front prop is turning then its one of the hubs if not its the transfer box

Cncfabs, im going to do that tomorrow, but with the aid of a rolling road. Dont fancy it shooting forwards with the rear end in the air, as knowing my luck, it will be the only time it does work! :lol

considering the facts ...... you dont have front wheel drive .

4wd light isnt on

its safe to deduce that your 4wd isnt working for some strange reason

looks to me is some has either taken out all the auto hub parts or they just dont work, need a service or changing

sounds more like a problem in the transfer box, you can check the front hubs by just laying under the front and turn the front drive shafts they should be free then as you turn them they should click and lock up, they will unlock again when the wheels turn, Rick

easiest way to test that the prop is locking is to put in 4wd and see if you can turn it if you can then transfer box

next out of 4wd turn the front prop and see what happens at the drive shaft when you turn the prop both fronts should turn and then stop one by one

normally it is just the that fails and when turning the prop the one that continually moves is the broken one

hope it is just a bulb but from what you say about the light not lighting up on ignition on then is does sound like this

I expect the bulb is just turned on from a switch on the lever, same as the handbrake. Maybe a fault with that is why the bulb doesn't light.
That wouldn't stop 4WD working though.

Hi Kamsin, welcome to the club.

Follow the advice given, but also the switch for the 4 wheel drive selection is on the side of the gearbox / transfer box. Not to be confused with the reverse switch.
It could be the wire has become disconnected/broken for the 4 wheel drive.
It may be the bulb, the previous owner may have used it as a spare bulb. :nenau

The key to finding the fault with the 4 wheel drive is by rotating the front prop shaft when in 2 H, rotating the shaft about 3-5 revolutions should engage the front hubs. You don't even need to jack the vehicle up or take anything off, but wear a glove to keep your hand clean. Slide under on a sheet of cardboard, easier than crawling.

As suggested, select 4 H then try and rotate the front prop shaft, there should be only a bit of back lash.

NO NEED TO RUN THE ENGINE FOR EITHER OF THESE CHECKS. :thumb2

If I was running the engine, engaging 4 wheel drive on axle stands, I would have the vehicle on 4 axle stands, ie all 4 wheels off the ground and always have some one in the vehicle all the time. Too risky otherwise.

Good luck, best regards,
Rustic

Thank you all for your posts on this matter. I found the problem with the light, there was no bulb in it:confused:. im hoping they swaped it for some thing they needed more like the indicator, if it had blown:(.

Now is this good or bad. i can spin the prop and see all the drive shafts spin with it, but its not locking into the wheels! im now hopeing this aint going to be bad, and its some thing to do with them snap rings or some thing!

Sounds as though you are getting there, I was right about the bulb then, something I have done, but usually a bulb that's not used. In the mean time I would have bought some spares for next time.:nenau

Front hubs easy to fix or replace, nothing major in the transfer box by the sound of it, so you have the cheapest repair possible by the sound of it.
:thumbs

Probably the innards have been removed.

If they have removed the inside of the hubs, what are the best hubs to put back on, autos or manuals?

manuals would work out LOADS cheatper... millners? i think

switch cannot be on the lever, it must be on the selector as you can move the lever out of 4WD stationary and the light stays on till you have shunted a bit in order to take the load off to allow it to disengage, Rick

Right, had the car in the air, 4WD working as it should right up too the wheels, so this now indicates its the hubs. Im now going to start to take them apart one by one (Im going to do both) and see if i can see whats wrong. I will keep you posted. I may even take photos as i go!:thumb2
