This now looks like it could be the front diff that is at fault.

Iv dont the hubs and they are ok now, but when in 4 wheel drive the prop spins to the front diff then nothing else happens. I know its got an oil leak and may have no oil in it now, could this stop it working though. I thought the oil just lubbed it up.

Thoughts please as i have found a diff on Flebay for £40 im guessing they all the same.

sounds strange as you say the oil just lubes and cools:thumb2, are the half shafts spinning?:nenau

No, nothing spining after the prop into the diff.

I dont know if its a replace or repair, guess its going to have to come off for ma to have a look first. Iv sorced a couple out, are they all the same or do some have different ratio's :augie

think later 1s had different ratio rear diff but not sure the front was different as u will only use 4wd on slippery surface so it wont matter if different ratios as everything can slip and when on the road front prop is allowed to rotate at did speed to rear so even with fixed hubs ur fine on road in 2wd:thumbs

May have a Diff, but its off an AUTO, anyone know if this will be a problem?

On pirate 4x4 people recon it makes little difference if u have differing ratios front to rear as long as they are within 5% and some say 10% is ok

yes looks like your diff has failed, fuffed if I know why cos they are real heavy duty, but no oil???, anyway there are ratio differences between petrol diesel, and auto/manual, but as said minor ratio differences will make little odds on the soft stuff, but will cause heavy wind up on tarmac, Rick

Cheers Rick, i had a feeling you would know. So fingers crossed then i should be ok with the Auto one of R1cho. It dont look like to much of a big job either but may wait now till next weekend as i dont want a truck off the road all week in case one brakes down and i cant get to work. :lol

Its had an oil leak since i got it, but only leaks if its left parked up hill, so i park it down hill, just not got round to fixing it yet. Im only guessing there is going to be little oil left in it when i take it off. :doh

Had another look today, spining the prob does make the half shaft sping a 1/4 turn, then nothing. The prop still spins after.

I dont see how they can turn then stop and nothing happen, cos if they sping then they are enguaged, but then they fail.

Rick, your thought please...:thumbs

been off line for a couple of days, dongle probs, just catching up, if you turn individual front drive shafts does one lock but not the other? or do both lock? if both lock then most likely front diff, if only one locks then the auto locker on the other is the problem, Rick on re reading your post if you are turning the front prop shaft and the drive shafts turn a bit then stop then you have stripped teeth from the crown wheel and pinion, replace the diff.

Thats sounds like the problem to me, ticks the boxs. :doh

Im guess the oil leak had something to do with it before i got it. :augie

Cheers Rick.
