Grrrr...
My Nissan (had it for less than 3 months) will not start at all.
This is an intermittent problem that has now become permanent.
I've had the RAC out 5 times...changed the battery...changed the fuel solenoid...had it towed...etc etc.
When the car does start it runs fine. And when it does start it just suddenly fires up...there's no way of telling what was wrong.
The engine management light is now on permanently..steady, not flashing.
When it won't start it is because there is no fuel at all getting to the injectors/plugs (whatever...I'm just a girl), then it's like something gets switched on and away it goes.
I've read every post on this site...please tell me how to diagnose the managment light fault with the paper clip...my better half is on the brink of getting this fault diagnoser off the web. :|
If anyone can help it will be appreciated...I'm fast becoming very disillusioned with this car...thanks...thanks...thanks
PS...this satrted after I had a full service and after I let the fuel run a teensy weensy bit low...

Oh..I got the pdf for fault diagnosing off the downloads section. (With a paper clip! I think that's brilliant...so sophisticated and expensive and high tec :? )
So...will try to get a code...but in any case if anyone out there has any other ideas...(besides pushing it off a cliff
:(

hi rachel, do not dispare i'm almost sure between all the members of the club a solution to your nissan's problem will be found. a good starting point is to put your nissan's details on your signature(this can be found in "your details" on your home page) so that the other club members can see what vehical you have. model, year, petrol or deisel etc.

- do the ignition lights light up when you put key in the ignition and turn it?
- does the engine turn over when you turn the key?
- is their a clicking noise when you turn the key?
- does anything happen when you turn the key?

hi i just looked at you post again, did the rac tell you that their is no fuel getting to the injectors? thier are a few reasons why this can happen

- broken/cracked fuel lines.
- dirty fuel (although fuel filter should have taken care of this).
- blocked fuel filter.
- knackered fuel pump.

Sorry...I thought I had put my car as a signature.

It's a Nissan Terrano II S. 2.7 Diesel w-reg 2000 (was in the 'big green cars' section at the garage I bought it from.)

The ignition lights come on as normal (except engine management light)...the engine turns over as normal...there is a 'clicking' sort of winding down noise after I turn the ignition off.
The engine turns over until the battery has no power left. All the RAC guys saw that there was not a drop of fuel going to the injector/plugs...and there was no blockages in the fuel lines, and then all of a sudden the fuel just comes through...won't start at all now tho.
On the third attempt at starting the door locks clunk...?

Oh...and this all happened after I changed the windscreen wipers but no one seems to think this could be the problem...

Sorry, if I don't have a laugh with myself I'll take a sledge hammer to it.

Thanks for replying. Rachel

another thing to think about - did you get a warranty with the vehical when your bought it? if so let the garage sought the problem out.

I wonder if it's something to do with the Nats system, when you turn the key does it beep at you,and how long does it take for the glow plug light to go out?

The RAC guys all seemed to conclude that there were no blockages...tho air in the line may have been an initial problem...there's no rhyme nor reason in it. Sometimes started....sometimes nothing would get it going.

If the fuel pump was knackered would it go at all...because when it DID start it ran fine...

My better half is going to try to get the fault code tonight...if we have that then hopefully we won't be flailing around in the dark.

We did wonder at the NATS system...but the management light has never flashed...nor does it beep when I put the key in.

The key fob is a little dodgy...I have changed the battery in it...but I cannot lock it with the key...doesn't work...and can just about unlock it with the key...by digging nail into it. I've been locking it using the drivers door lock...and now don't lock it at all. Well...it's not going anywhere.

I'll be back on later today...with some codes hopefully...now I have to get back to work...look sharp and quit messing on the computer!!! Boss is coming 8O

Thanks for helping thus far...

Just wondering if it's something to do with the imobilesier,if the imob doesn't go off will the car just turn over but not start?? Anybody? lol :?

Hi rachel, I think cosmic could have a point about the immobiliser , I bought a key and didn't realise that although I had followed the down loads the chip in the key was not working . Are you using the same key every time :?: Where are you located in the UK :?: give your local Nissan dealer a bell I use Marshalls in cambridge and find them very helpfull and not to expensive and in the long run it may save your marriage (very presumptuus) for a few ££ you might.......well

When it does start does the engine management light come on when you turn ignition on? or does it never come on?

I had problem in past with a car (petrol) when management light didn't come on, engine didn't start and it was crank shaft rotation sensor relay that was knackered, £25 relay sorted it. Its there as a safety device, no engine rotation no fuel. I don't know if diesel engines are the same.

Someone will confirm this I'm sure.

Just had a quick look a cd manual

2.7 TDI engine looks a 3 sensors for starting, looks at others for idling and normal running. Fault codes should tell which one I think. I'm no auto electricain

Engine Coolant sensor
Crank position sensor
control sleeve sensor

These are looked at Via ECM (ecu) one not working no fuel

hope this helps????

Toolbox or Terranokid your input here is much needed

Hello
We have done the paper clip...and these are the codes that came up.
92...Engine control relay, shut off time -too late: Wiring open/short circuit, engine control relay. ECM

93...Ignition switch/ECM voltage supply -circuit malfunction:Wiring short circuit

98...coolant sensor?

We have also disconneted the battery now for 24hrs to reset the ecm...is that worth bothering with?

I have called the dealer I bought this from and he was less than helpful...saying that his warranty only covers engine and gearbox and it was basically tough luck...but I believe I have some other 'statutory rights'? Can anyone clarify whether he is obliged to sort this out?

Thanks for help so far...

I have had simlar problems with a terrano It turned out to be a faulty ignition switch. How long ago did you buy the vehicle? I would go straight to the cab and find out what your rights are or go on there web sites as a trader your garage will have certain obligations and if they are aa or rac approved these might be more in you favour

but if its engine wont start aint that engine or is he saying because you think electrical tough!
ignition switch one is interesting do a search sure theres a thread on duff switches or wire burning out from back switch clutchin at straws but another one to elimnate!

Just been searching the forums and found an exact same problem...which was eventually solved by resetting the NATS system.

Is there a way to do this without specialist equipment or a way to eliminate/confirm this is the problem?

stat rights ...... it is not fit for the purpose you bought it for log on to the CAB website for more info
(Citizens advice bureau)

I do belive you can diconnect the battery for 24 hrs to reset,

Someone will tell me if i am wrong, Mine has no NATS fitted,

Mav.
