Hi,

We've been the proud owner of a Terrano 2 for over ten years and love her to bits (178k of brilliant motoring !). The old girl has just failed the MOT with a rusty crossmember. It looks like this is a common problem. You can put your hand in the holes behind the bumper (ooppss)

What I can't find is any information on what you need to do to get the front bumber off and it looks like cut the spot welds on the panel to get it off to repair ??

I have access to welding, metal cutting and folding and it doesn't look too tricky to fix.

Can anyone offer up any advice or pictures please ??

Few on here repaired there t2 c/member so someone should be along, try I Douglas by pm.

Front bumper is held on by 4 bolts (2 each side) if you look under the wheelarch at the end of the chassis i bolt is above the body mount one bolt is to the rear of the mount. You may need to pull back the rubber trim to see them

Thanks !! I'll go hunting and hopefully report back the weekend after next (it's half term time !) ...

You'll have to make up your own X member or pay nissan £200 for one:rolleyes:I sold my T2 & bought a V8 Disco:D

Had my cross member welded for £30 and watched the V8 discos cutting out in the water at our last pay n play day :lol
Also mine is quicker than a v8 :D

So far so good ....

1) Jacked up the truck onto axle stands, pulled off the front wheels, pulled back the covers.

2) Disconnected the indicators

3) Undid the four bolts - very obvious which ones they are

4) Two rust areas - the crossmember holding the air conditioning radiator and a small patch just up from it close the the chassis mount.

5) I cut the crossmember off with an angle grinder and a hacksawblade

6) Two repair panels hand crafted for the cross member + one for the body mount.

7) Awaiting a friend who's a good mig welder who can stitch it back together next weekend.

Will report back and try and put a few pictures up but a lot less grief than I thought so far ...

Thanks to everyone for their help.

My daughters enjoy going to Discos :)

have got to weld the front x member on one of mine.
was just going to cut out said rusty bit and replace it with some 50x50 box section.
work for an engineering co so materials are free:thumbs
also needs sills welding and i was thinking of doing the same with these, cutting off and replacing with box sections.

good repair

I had a 3.9 disco, full leather, air con, cruise control fully loaded ES model.

went into water - guess what? cut out.

gave it away in the end on one condition, it never darkens my door again,
my mate then sold it.
genuine reason for sale - it was a dog

paulp

So using Wickes thin angle grinder blades meant the repaired crossmember lined up with the front bulkhead and it all welded back together.

The job is much easier than I thought and definately one that can be tackled as a DIY job - the welding cost me £150 for the two repairs to the crossmember and a patch to the front bulkhead - mobile welder who came to me.

The only slight gotcha is the front bulkhead seems to be made of three very thin layers of steel and not as solid as it looks. At first it looked ok but once I had tested it with a small hammer more fell away leaving a very thin outline.
Useful to cut the templates for the repair but not much else ..

Thanks to everyone who replied ...
