Evening all .. I'm looking for a Nissan patrol 4.2.. For a tow truck.. Any decent cars around ?

Thanks in advance

Nath

So I've been looking for a decent patrol for ages now and understand that the 2.8 and the 4.2 are the ones to have .. Any decent ones for sale ?

Hi nath, All i can say is good luck really, ive just bought a 4.2 one that is exceptionally tidy underneath however a little rugged and needed a little bit of a tidy up. i still had to pay good money for it though and the guy had no shortage of buyers. They sell pretty quick if they are good but there are rusty ones that will need lots of welding, I looked at several and walked away becouse of rust.. 2.8 can have head issues.. Areas to check for rust are radiator support x member, sills inner and outer, wheel arches all 4, under rear seat front mounts, they have a doubler plate that rusts through on the inside of the car first on the floor. Inside rear wheel arches where all the seems join at the front. Under the bonnet look at the bulk head seam just below the pipe work, and battery trays. Rear of the chassis can rust on the inside either side of the tank.. Thats the most common areas... Good ones now are becomming rare and command good money but if you can weld and own a welder anything can be repaired but it takes time... Buy wisely. The minimum seems to be £2500 with or without mot otherwise they get sent overseas as that is the going rate for them.. Also when you get one get a sky tag fitted..
A few people on here have them and most people who do love them. Ive had patrols for around ten years or so and love them. If i was looking now and couldnt find a y60 i would go for a y61 swb, they rust in the same areas..

Welcome bud :thumbs

4.2 Trols are like hen's teeth and you'll pay a premium whatever the condition (they'll be at least 21 (?) years old). Unless you get a Y61 import you'll be limited to the older Y60s (still awesome though :D).

2.8 Trols are avaliable in Y60 and Y61 flavours, newer Y61s are also available with the 3.0 engine. 3.0 got a bad rep due to problems with the the early versions (Nissan dropped the ball a bit with them :doh) but the post 2003 ones are sound as long as they're maintained properly (sound policy with any engine).

wow, thanks for the heads up lads!:thumbs As much as I really want a y60 4.2.

There are 2 y61's for sale near me that would be worth a look.

First y61 lwb 2.8 has done 86k miles, looks very tidy bud zero service history and £4495?

The second is another y61 2.8 done 175k miles and has a bit of history and has just had a new radiator, alternator, battery, 5 x new tyres, new starter, and is about £2500?

neither can confirm if the timing belt has been done?

Are the 4.2's really that good?

how do you get onto the classifieds on this forum?

Hi,

To see the classifieds you have to stump up the £10 for a years full membership.
Well worth it though and you will be able to search the whole forum.

Good luck

Go and have a look at it and then make a decision.
I bought my Terrano with zero service history, but it looked good, it drove well and sounded good. So far it has flown through MOTs but it does have a couple minor issues. Don't be too afraid of a zero service history, it might have been owned by a mechanic. There's an MOT checker web page that I posted a while back that should give you some history to its background.
