Hi Guys,

I am not a frequent poster, but read the forum a good bit. I also joined the club today :thumbs

I Just fail my car test in Ireland for the simple reason that they could not find the VIN number on the chassis. There is the VIN plate and another number above the passenger head light but no VIN on the Chassis. Car is genuine need to know where it could be, if you can check your car.

The other problem is my speedo is getting crazy.... the more I accelerate the more the speed is getting over ! so at 120km/h my clock says 140 !!! I replaced the speedo and the problem is the same !

Any helps will be great, I will give the spare speedo for free to the member who need a replacement if they pay for postage.

Sebastien

i think the plate you want is ouder the bonnet on the back bulkhead left hand side near the hinge.

Think my VIN plate is under the bonnett on the bulkhead as per zippys suggestion. Speedo on my T2 2000 reg is a nice bit out as well about 8 km per hour when doing 80 kmph. Yours does sound a bit excessive though. What wheels / tyres have you on. Could they be a bit smaller than stock size. Rather than changing speedos and probably getting the same result you might be better going up a size in tyres.

Sorry, did you just say "free speedo to any member who would pay for postage". Where in Ireland are you. I'm interested if the Mistral speedo from the 96 model will fit the Terrano 2 2000 model. But my suggestion to you would be to hang on to the second speedo depending on the type it is. Some of these commonly have problems, especially if it is a magnetic morelli type. You might be needing it yet.

If you've got a facelift Dan (or the car for that matter :lol ) then its a digital mileometer not the old fashioned spinning dial and I don't think the two are interchangeable.

Locteau; as Dan says a 10% over-read is quite common but yours is a bit excessive, I assume you've checked it against a satnav?

Find out what standard tyres should be, not sure on your truck as its a bit older, and see if yours conform, as suggested - if they are too small you will get an excessive over-read....I'm also assuming they are not flat LOL

Other than that, I'm not aware its illegal, just a PITA, thats why I keep my satnav on all the time.

"under the bonnett on the bulkhead"

You might think I am stupid, but is this under the car or is it under the carpet. Can't see it and can't remove the carpet and isolator.

Regarding the speedo, it is a manual one, so does not do everything I need on the automatic. It does need some bulbs.

Two things: firstly, just realised this is a Mistral, so the VIN might just be somewhere else.....any other Mistral owners out there care to comment? The info you've been given holds good for the T2/Maverick but....

Secondly, not sure what you mean by the comment I've highlighted???? Do you mean your truck is an auto and the speedo is for a manual, so missing some warning lights??

speedo

The speedo for the mistral auto or manual shares the same principal connections, difference are gear on the dash from what I know.

well it makes no sense to have to different types does it, just whacks up manufacturing costs unnecessarily, so I suppose it must just be down to the wiring loom?

thanks

ok, I am sure you know better than me, I just know that it fits on my car and works the same from what I saw. fitting screws, and plugs are the same but I am sure you are right with some wiring be different etc....

The VIN is more important matter at the moment for my car test.... so pleas help me on this.

Ok,I've just had a look at my owners manual for a Terrano and it has the VIN locations as; Zippy's directions on the bulkhead but I believe Sebastien is looking for the location on the actual chassis which the manual shows as being below the right hand side front (driver's) door about midway along. I'd imagine it is located on the actual chassis rather than just below the driver's door. Ok, I've checked mine and it is indeed on the actual chassis and very visible if you just bend down and look under the driver's door.

Hmmmm...

Every vehicle I have worked on with a ladder chassis has it stamped somewhere, but I wouldnt know where this is on a Mistral. Vintage Rolls-Royces have it stamped on the front of the right hand chassis rail.

There will be a chassis plate... unless for some reason its been removed in the past. I think every 4x4 i've worked on has theirs on the bulkhead...

The bulkhead is the metal bit that seperates your feet from the engine!

Pop your bonnet and look right at the back for a small metal plate around 3 or 4 inches long... It will be somewhere easilly visible.

Failing that other manufacturers often put the plate on the inside of a door pillar - Rolls Royce do both!

Sometimes the VIN number is on the passenger side of the dash, look through the windscreen to see this... this is where it is located on my Grand Cherokee.

Failing that its on your reg document... but then thats probably no good for the MOT!

Last suggestion I have is look down the side of the front seats for a small flip-up cover, if it has this it will be under there!

After that i'm clueless, never worked on a Mistral :nenau

Have digital speedo so won't work for me so. I'm confused about the VIN number. You said you have the VIN number from a plate above the headlight. You are looking for the chassis number so I'm guessing if your looking on the chassis someplace. Someone on here must know where on the chassis to find the number on a 96 Mistral.

The chassis number is usually just the last 5 or 6 digits of the VIN number, but again thats for most manufacturers not 100% sure about Nissan as I dont deal in Nissan parts only British manufacturers ;)

Well its the one on the plate under the bonnet that HMRC checked when I bought my last new Terrano - after two vehicles with the same reg showed up on DVLA!! Wasn't me at fault thank goodness.....

nope i had the same problem gave the numbers also from the plate use talkin about and it is not recognised only other thing is on or near drivers footwell other than that :nenau

VIN

The VIN plate is under the bonnet, like usually, you are right the one I am looking for is the one engraved on the chassis.

I already looked under the passenger door, and the problem is there is a step there..... is your one too ? and what year is your terrano ?

can you tell me where exactly it is from the picture please.

The chassis number is easy to find, the digits are 20mm high....

Find the chassis under the drivers door, chassis facing outwards, get a torch and shine it along the chassis, and you will clearly see it. Well I can on my 95 Mav (with new battery).

Problem solved

Ok guys, this has been solved.

We spend about 4 hours on the car this morning and tried everywhere. I called NISSAN Ireland which told me that because it is not imported by themeless they don't have any documentation especially not about the Mistral which seems to be rare here for some reasons.

The Terrano Official place for the numbers are :
- under the bonnet on the plate
- on the passenger door a strong sticker should be there (mine is in Japenese, so the test centre does not want to know about it)
- on the chassis under the driver door close to the middle of the back and front door.

My one is actually under the driver door but close to the wheel which made it unreadable. Which they said is not good enough, and we had to clean is with some sort of acid product in the garage and remove some old paint and came back really good. They then said that we tried to engrave it ourselves, and I knew they would say this so we have pictures and video of what we did.

They accepted it and told them that their behavior was unacceptable as the car had many test done in the past.

Anyway.... all done. Need to fix the speedo now.
