Hi all
New to the 4x4 scene so be gentle lol.
I've just purchased a terrano 3.0sve 2005 and when.I turn the ignition key at normal speed the starter engages but jumps out and won't start but if I turn the key slowly it turns over fine and starts. Any ideas??
Cheers daz

Welcome to the best site for all things Nissan 4x4.

Yours is a common fault, it is the ignition switch, usually the rear contact block.
This is a dealer only part, but is quite cheap to replace.

best regards,
Rustic

Cheers for the quick response mate. So I just ring nissan and ask for the rear contact block behind ignition?

Most probably... but other members that have changed them will be able to advise, I would wait a while for their input.

No doubt, you will be asked to show "Pics" of your truck, before the morning is out lol...

You will enjoy this club, we have more collective knowledge on these trucks than any main dealer. We also like cheap fixes.

If you spend your £10 on the annual joining fee, you will then start to fix faults that you never knew you had lol... Some fixes are free...:thumb2

Just in case you hadn't noticed, I have had my Mav from new for over 20 years...:lol

Hi and welcome aboard. Yeah normally when people post with similar issues turning key slowly is one of the things people suggest to try.
I've seen the ignition switch on ebay but not sure if brand new or second hand which could be just as worn as yours assuming it is the switch of course. The switch has a single screw that holds it to the bottom of the lock barrel, the screw is a pig to get to but not too bad.

So if this has fixed ya truck it's gotta be worth membership :thumb2 as Rustic says. Theres stacks of workshop downloads available and banter too when you have full access.

Hi mate and welcome :thumb2

A video of you starting the truck pointing at the ignition barrel as your doing it would be great as we could tell you for certain if it's the ignition switch or not.

I wouldn't have thought a 2005 would have suffered with this :nenau My 1996 Maverick was terrible, the barrel was loose and the key would sometimes fall out it was that worn. My 2004 is solid as a rock, doesn't move and inch in the barrel.

Bienvenido!
No idea on the ignitionm switch but I can look at, and appreciate, photos.
So....

Hi mate and welcome, yes from your description it is the switch block on the back of the ignition switch/barrel, easy and cheap fix to replace, but would not bother with second hand, those that say odd for a 2004 are forgetting that Nissan did a lot of cost cutting on the later models, so they rust quicker and break easier, they probably cut the grease in the switch, Rick

Welcome!

You don't have to be mad to be on here (but most of them are! )

Best £10 you can ever spend on this forum. They have an answer for all things Nissan, and an opinion on everything else!

Come on in, the waters lovely!

Sorry just read this first thread, usually a good thing to do before commenting :doh

Mine does exactly the same thing, have to turn slowly otherwise it goes past the "on" stage.

Something else you might experience is the radio, blowers ect not working, engine is running but ignition ect is off :naughty thats an interesting one...

This is what I mean!!!! I'm sure the later ones look like a different metal to the earlier ones and I've not seen a wore one yet!!!!

Surely the metal ignition barrel and being able to remove keys or the barrel being nice n tight has got nothing to do with the plastic switch wearing out.

The ignition lock barrel and the plastic switch are two seperate pieces held together by one screw:thumbs

Sorry to hijack the thread, but Banshee, could you check your PM`s.........sorry:bow

Only pic I've got at min. Hoping to get round to having a good luck round it tomorrow. So far I have found abs light on, caution light on (handbrake light) but fluid OK and handbrake lever is loose.

They suffer with the abs sensors on the front wheels so I've heard. Genuine are 90 quid Me believes?

Handbrake light will prob be an easy fix and then plain sailing. :thumb2

Looks tidy :D
