Hi just registered today. I bought a SWB Maverick in the summer as the snow was so bad last year and also thought it would be fun to try some "off road"

Normally drive a BMW (rubbish in snow) and also have a classic TR6, sometime use the wifes van or 2 seater coupe

I did some spoarts car racing when I was in my twenties and some grass tracking in later years. (very late forties now)

I work in the motor industry for a truck manufacture and also built, fixed and sold all sorts of cars



Drove in the snow today and realised I Know nothing about driving a 4wd .

I get the impression it probably isnt any safer just easier to pull away.

Any advice would be welcome also do I set of in 4wd then change back to

2wd or stay in 4wd also when would you use low drive

what year is your maverick as theres 2 different types?

only use 4wd when the front and back can slip a little as there is no diff in the center.

As for driving in snow, 4wd helps you going and turning but when you have to stop quickly your about the same use as a car unless you use your gears.

Hi its a 98 2.4 petrol

needed a bit of work (tail pipe, emisions and MOT) but all done and its quite nice now and kept me busy for a couple of days. Fitted a tow bar and had to re wire the radio loom as it was a mess but bought it for the right money and wouldnt do many miles so fuel ecomomy is not an issue

ah think thats similar to mine, I think around 1999 onwards they changed massively.

Does it have the same lights as my avatar picture on the left?

No mine are square. Fancy some big spots on the front though

Ah right didn't know they were still square till 1998. Must be because it's petrol.

registered Jan 98 so would be a 97 model. Do you know if you can change in and out of 4wd while driving

yes you can mate, only high ratio tho, and only up to 25mph. when you get chance, you take back out of 4wd and reverse a meter or two to disengage. don't drive in 4wd unless its slippy, otherwise you will get transmission wind up.

as for snow, wahey, these are great fun, and VERY capable i have found. Yup, heavy braking in snow and your stuffed because of the weight, but pulling away, turning etc, a breeze. For the money, you really cant go wrong!

no point reversing if you think you need to go back into 4wd whithin a mile.

In my Mav, 2.7 Td, I use 4 wheel drive low, second gear to go down steep slippy inclines, take your feet off the pedals and just aim it.
Excellent control, I also have a hand throttle, and I control the speed on that.

If you over rev it, or use the brakes you will loose traction and slide.....
