Took a punt at a Terrano off ebay with a gearbox fault
Sellers words below:

"REVERSE THEN GO FORWARD AND IT STARTS TO MAKE A WHINING NOISE AND A COUPLE OF CLUNKS.

PUT IN 4WD. AND GO A FEW HUNDRED YARDS AND THE PROBLEM CURES ITSELF.

IT DOES NOT RE-OCCUR UNTIL YOU REVERSE AGAIN.

DOES NOT LIKE GOING BETWEEN 50-60M.P.H.(WHINES).

WILL NOT REVERSE IN 4WD"

Any ideas as to cheapest fix??:thumbs

Hi eddie sounds like auto hubs playing up. look in down load sectoion for fix...

Easy way to test if the hubs are sticking or if it's worse. Remove the front auto locking hubs with the alan bolts. Inside you'll find the lock rings or break rings. Remove thos and refit the hubs. 4WD is then disabled and noise should be gone. If it's gone you know it's break rings or hubs. Like Zippy says we have the downloads section within Quick Links and also dozens of threads on these little things.

yep, as above, the issue might turn out to be an easy fix, manual hubs arent terribly expensive i dont think

Thanks very much guys, I'll give it a whirl and let you know how I go on.

Thanks again for the fast response.:clap

Just a quick update guys.

You were all spot on, took the brake ring out and running like a dream.

Been trawling through here for a couple of days and I see there are loads of threads on the 4wd issue.......promise I'll be more patient next time and will do a search first.

Once again I can't thank you enough and it really is the best tenner I've spent in a long time!!

Also you can get the bits you need to fix the hubs from the scrappy for a few quid:D

the rings are a comon problem, also check you have the right 710 in the back dif ....

ask away, any thing we are always here to help, response time should be quicker too!! lol

I paid £350 for a P reg with 10 months MOT and 8 months tax, bit of a rusty wing on drivers side (sourced a s/h 1 for £50 are they easy to fit?) but apart from that I think I got a good motor for little money.

Zippy:

What on earth is the "710 in the back diff?"
Sounds painful.....

Thanks again guys.:clap

ah indeed you are a newbie!

right 710 on a bit of paper then turn 180 deg.. all will be revield
