Hi guys,
Have been kind of retired living in Spain for the last 7 years.
When i first came over i had a Mitsubishi Delica and towed all my possessions including a flat pack kitchen from the top of Spain to the south. Took me 3 trips to do the whole lot.
After 12 months i tried to get Spanish plates for said car, only to be told i could not as it was a car not normally sold in Spain. So drove it back to the Uk to the same dealer i bought it from and exchanged it for a Nissan Mistral LWB auto with the 2.7td engine. I think it is a 1995/1996 version. Bought a couple of armchairs and some cornflakes to fill up the back and once more drove back to the south of Spain. Car was much more economical, and did the journey quicker. Probably because i did not take any wrong turns!
Anyway as Terranos had been built in Spain i was fairly confident of getting Spanish plates in due course. I eventually did, but had to remove the reversing mirror, the small overtaking mirror and my big fog lamps located on the bull bar before it was accepted. Also had to have a long rear number plate with new lights fitted to the rear bumper as the normal location for a square shaped plate on the rear door was not big enough to take the Spanish size plate. They looked very closely at the wind deflectors around the windows as well, but i got away with that. 2 years later at the itv (mot) test i was told the law had changed and my rear fog light was on the wrong side, so now have one fitted under the bumper on the correct side.
So now to my next problem. I am on the move again, and this time hoping to get to Bulgaria. Only one journey this time and i am hoping to get all i want to take in a trailer and the car. I know i can not use my old uk trailer with Spanish plates, so that is remaining here with all the winter firewood stored in it. So i have to get a tow hitch fitted by an authorised dealer and then buy a trailer. On my Spanish car documents it quotes the weight of the car and says i can tow 750 kg unbraked and 2800 kg braked, which i now know after reading articles on this site is not correct. Also on further inspection of the paperwork it says i have a Terrano 2 tdi, even though the chassis number quote it as being the r20 series with the td engine.
So wanting to know accurately what i can tow and especially what the gross train weight is for a Nissan Mistral i have been searching the web in vain. Then i discovered that the weights should all be on the vin number. Full of hope i looked under the bonnet at the plate, only to discover that it only showed the chassis number and no weights at all.
So my questions are as the plate is blank does it mean that i am not allowed to legally tow anything? Alternatively would it be termed as a "car" which means no GTW has to be quoted and i can tow what i want? Or am i just being stupid and looking in the wrong place?
Unfortunately being a Japanese import i have no handbook and most of the other writing on the car is in Japanese.
From reading the forum i think the GTW should be 4280 kg and the gross trailer weight 1700 kg, but how do i prove this to any policeman that might stop me.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Sounds like Spanish authorities can be a nightmare. Any way welcome aboard and good luck.

Hi and welcome. Sorry I cant offer any problem solving advice but someone here should be able to answer your questions.
Ian

Sadly there is no correct answer to this problem, it is purely down to the guy who stops you the Spanish have no regard for regularity in my book, and you are heading Bulgaria in any case so what has it to do with them, eff em and drive it, Rick

Bienvenido al foro.
Back in 2011 I bought a towbar and trailer for all my stuff. Peugeot 206 and 750kg trailer, loaded it up and drove north to France.

I am also aware that the Guardia Civil are a lot more proactive in looking for revenue, I mean fines.... So chancing it might not be such a good idea, gone are the days of keeping 50€ in the driving licence. :naughty
You're aware of the Spanish towing law so you will know all this http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/175-towing-trailers-in-spain-and-the-law.html.
Regarding the towing weight I guess you'd have to speak with the DGT, but I can't see anything anywhere relating to the tow car, but you can check the towing weights here http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/nissan/terrano/station-wagon-1993/dimensions/.
Everything regarding tow weights matches between UK and Spain so it looks like the weights are European wide rather than country specific. The difference being the homologation and insurance cost and possibly licence categories ( I know I lost a few categories on my Spanish licence). Regarding the Japanese writing, as long as you have Spanish papers, you should be OK.
Book a week off work and get down to the DGT just to be sure. Altnatively get down to your local Norauto and tell them you're looking to buy a trailer and get them to show you the regs on what's legal.

Newbie in Spain

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the greetings and friendly advice, especially to Don Simon. I will have to brush up on my Spanish and go to the DGT.
I have already been to a company on the coast who sell trailers and fit tow bars for a quote, but they never came back to me. He did look at my registration details and said i could tow up to 750 kg unbraked and 2800 kg braked, but he never looked at the vin plate or noticed i had an automatic. What i really want to know is, if my registration details say i can tow up to 2800 kg does it matter that my vin plate is blank?
Next time i am at the coast i will see the guy again,to see if he can sort things out. I know that having a tow bar fitted has to be entered on to the registration details and checked at an ITV (MOT) centre. There is one just up the road from his place, so should not be a problem. It was also his company that dealt with my car being transferred to Spanish plates.

By the way the camper conversion looks really good. I did not think there was enough length in the back of a Terrano to fit a bed.

personally , I wouldn't wish to tow much with the auto box

I don't need to tow much. Problem is i have 2 dogs and a cat not to mention the wife who will take up most of the space in the car. I might even be able to manage with a big 750 kg trailer and put some stuff on the roof. I just want to make sure i am legal to tow anything at all. Especially as i will be travelling through so many different countries en route.

I'd work off the automatic tow weights, which is 1700kg according to Parkers and that way you'll not be attracting attention. And if you get stopped there's less for them to have a pop at you for. Remember the Guardia Civil use Terranos and Patrols so they'll probably know towing weights and know what to look for.

Muchas gracias.
With the front seat folded down there's plenty of room for this 183cm midget. :thumbs

Hi Don,
Sorry for the delay in replying. Neighbour took ill and i have been ferrying his wife back and forth to the hospital.
I think after doing a lot of calculations re cost of fitting a towbar and buying a trailer out here, then factoring in the extra fuel used, costs on the ferries, time taken to drive the distance at a snail's pace, accommodation etc., i will probably skip the idea altogether. What i will do is put what i can on the roof and fill up any gaps in the car around the animals. The rest i will send by removal van. Got a few quotes, and for what i want to take will only cost a little more than if i had bought a trailer. Also means that i will be able to take all of my precious tools, instead of getting rid of half of them.

Here is a new question. Do you or anybody else know what this little gismo is?
It is located below the dashboard behind the steering column, and every morning when i switch on the ignition it is like a very loud audible alarm inside the car. As soon as i start the car it stops, and no matter how many times i start and stop the car during the day it does not do it again.
At first i thought it was related to the glow plugs as it started soon after i changed them a couple of years ago, but i know now that the relay connected to them is in the engine compartment. However i also changed the factory fitted radio at the same time and was wondering if it might be connected to that. My mobile mechanic (ex Nissan) at the time located the offending object, but had no idea of what it was for. He disconnected one of the cables and the car seemed to start ok, but he put it back and said if i was happy with the noise to just leave it.
It is quite possible that it is only present on the Japanese import models.

Hope the gent in question is OK.
Glad you're sorted on the travel arrangements. When I came back I bought a trailer in Spain then sold it in the UK to recoup some money.
Just be aware of the roofrack weight limits, it'd be a shame to tip the truck over.
I have no idea what that gizmo is.

Have read somewhere that the maximum roof weight is 100kg, but doubt i will be taking that much on it. I will just get one of the big bags and stuff it with clothes and bedding. Wont need much else for a while as will be renting until i find a house.
As for the sick gent, i am afraid he has had a mini stroke and my taxi services are continuing for a while.

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, Thule have a recommendation of 60kg inc the roof bars. https://roofracks.co.uk/pdf-reader/web/viewer.html?file=https://roofracks.co.uk/_pdf/1109.pdf
