hello there, having probs with a 1999 y61 2.8 diesel ,it won't start when its hot it'll just wind the batt down but if you leave it until warm or cold its no problem, any ideas or what consult to buy to read the error codes, many thanks john

oooh could change the fuel line, as some times they let air get sucked IN,

fuel line

i'm never that lucky,if its air why would it start ok when its cooled down i was thinking more electrical something breaking down when hot with all the electrics on the fuel pump, when its hot theres fuel to the pump but none out the injector pipes and no air when you use the bleed screw

get your self next to an air line blast the electrics with it one at a time to cool them.
try a separate earth onto the ecu .
does it run ok when hot?
others will hoefully be along soon.
ps welcome to the mad house.

airline

yes it runs fine,so long as you don't turn it off,i'll try the airline tomorrow

Dont know much about the y61 but if it is not fly by wire, then wen hot can you detect the pump solenoid clicking? if not check there is power to it if yes then solenoid is sticking when hot, if no then bad connection/relay or ECU, Rick

yes they are fly by wire, its not the pump solenoid i have had a seperate live to that and kept it on when stopped and still no starting, please keep the ideas coming there might be something i have missed or don't know about, thanks to everyone

temp sensor when hot it might be tell the ecu to add to much fuel so it wont start but will do when only warm cor cold for the terrano 2.7 tdi the sensor only costs £9 from euro car parts hope this helps

Do you have any motion from the tacho during cranking with it hot? You have all the symptoms of a dying crank position sensor. Method of failure is little or no output when hot, but fine when cooler.

As someone said, cool it off with an airline, or freeze spray to test.

i have changed the temp sensor for the ecu the other one on the block is just the gauge i think, there is an ic sensor but i don't know if that would effect the starting

update

took it to nissan today,it was on diagnostics for 45 mins inc. test drive,£60 shorter with no error codes showing and they wound the batt flat trying to get it in the garage so they jumped it then put it on the machine, the short of it they say its the batt not putting out enough amps,so i'm trying to get a new batt on warranty from oldham, which is slow and painful

starter

no,i must have put it wrong, they wound it flat then put the jumper on it to start it to get it in the garage, sorry for the confusion

if you kept the hot wire to the stop solenoid, how did you stop the engine? Rick

if you turn the ign off the ecu shuts down and the maf and the rest of the electrical crap on there, the engine does rev up before it shuts down though

So will it fire up with a jump pack when hot? Will it bump start when hot?

How fast is it spinning over on the starter when hot?

I dont think we are getting accurate symptoms on this....
