New truck, new problems, new member

Hi all, new to the site as I've decided to look for online advise I have recently purchased a 95 Nissan mistral r20, I think you call it the maverick though, I bought it and replaced the rad hoses and radiator and the coolant sensors, and it never gets to the warmed up stage always gets to quarter Temp unless going up hills at speed, also I noticed when I start her on a hill and leave her ideling after a while short while like 3 minutes if that the idle starts dropping and then if I hold my foot on the pedal to just bring the revs up a bit it almost refuses to accelerate then starts smoking black a lot before accelerating and then reving so I'm here for some advice on that, drives real nice otherwise...

The temperature gauge often shows below half way, and this is considered normal.
Some have changed the thermostat, and have had improvements.

The rev issue, on most of the earlier trucks there is a minifilter, in the banjo nut of the fuel pump, often this gets clogged and gives similar symptoms.
If you intend to keep your truck for any length of time, then I suggest you pay the £10 for access to all the help sheets, inc how to clean mini filter, plus links to service manuals etc

Believe me... you will save that on your first fix.:thumb2

It's on the injector pump on the engine.
There is also another thing it could be...

The injector pump also pulls the fuel from the diesel tank, no pump in the fuel tank. Sometimes the fuel lines corrode, letting air in, which can cause the engine to run rough.

Hi all thanks for the welcome, yeah I have already replaced the thermostat, I'm a big fan of doing the cooling system on any car I buy because people here tend to use what I call swamp water for coolant here, I didn't drill a air bleed hole in it though, and I suppose I can't rule out a bad new thermostat, I can't fine a mysterious coolant leak a few drips on the ground but cannot see where from the engine e is coming from, all hoses look fine and appears to come from... Under the turbo? And no intercooler on this one, sorry if I'm all over the place 24 hours of no sleep sucks haha

Welcome, it's worth changing the fuel filter too, if it's blocked, the engine will hold back and smoke too.

common place for a slight water leak is the water pump , its not obvious as the coolant runs down and appears anywhere ....... also stat housing cracks or gasket perishes ...... I loved my mistral

Well I hope not! although i didnt mention it, I replaced the pump before the radiator ( what a mission ! ) so if its leaking its a waste of 300 nzd haha, otherwise, I think it may be a weeping frost plug maybe? when i drive the truck to where it wontt warm up anymore the hoses are nice and firm and equally hot, and the guage was tested and works fine so either the thermostat isnt quite working properly... or an air lock.. or a incorrect new sensor?? Ill dive in to the truck later on today, night shift sucks for not being able to work on the issues when i want haha

We did have a member recently who Bought a new dodgy thermostat, once the dealer swapped it again it was back to normal :thumb2

Smoking may be mini filter, and if not it's a good thing to remove anyway, more power :sly

So about an hour ago I got to remove the mini filter, as you may imagine, it was clogged to the brim, so removed entirely, I'm not going to try clean it, and wow what a difference, pulls sooo much better it used to hesitate from idle to 1700rpm and I thought it was turbo lag, and now also actually has power past 3krmp, its just like a new one! And much less smoke! So stoked thanks to everyone who helped with this issue, I'll now be watching the coolant level for a while, I haven't touched the thermostat yet, but it looks as though I'm finally not losing any coolant, so I'll wait a week before tackling why it stays at quarter temp when warm

Now try asking your main dealer for advice like that, now in the UK you would be kept on hold waiting to get through to the technical department longer than that. Then they would want you to book it in a week next Friday, before they can even start to diagnose the problem. They will replace around three or four components and finally give you the bill...

Collectively the members on this site know more than all the Nissan main dealers worldwide put together. Even more so as these trucks get older, the dealers just don't want to know.
Total price of the fix...£0, zero, zilch, nowt, nothing. As are many of the fixes for these trucks.
