Hi All,
I am looking at a 2003 X Trail 2.2 VDI Freerider, with 65,000 miles on the clock. The car is in good nik and has a lot of toys.
What should I be looking out for as far as thing that could be a problem.
Asking price £9000

Waaaaay too much money for a start, like about 4 grand!

A 2003 will be the pre facelift (unless its an 04MY) and the 112bhp engine, which is almost totally reliable (as reliable as anything Renault can be...)

i hear turbos go and the intercooler starts to leak and yes sound way to much i say £4500 to £5500

On the dCI yes. And HP pump / spill valve failures which is an engine out job to fix.

Hi David
Is that a French price? If so - not too far out of the ball park for France but way OTT for UK.
I've just paid the local Nissan dealer 8500 Euros (7228 GBP) for a '03 3ltr T2, WITH a years warranty (EU regulation for used cars) and I consider that a fair deal here in France. Same car in UK would have cost circa 4-5k GBP. But importation, new headlights and registration here would have been around a grand UK and I'd still have been stuck with a car I can't sell in France.
It's the price of living where you choose - some you win........

Hi Captlimey,
It is a French price Actualy Euro10,000. As Ive said it has alla the toy even leather interior 6cd radio/cd fogs, spots the lot.
For Timbo, how do I know if its the 04MY, 112 bhp, the problem is the french always list the power as CV, and this one is listed 07 CV.

bloody hell, i had no idea there was so much variation.

Hi Daved,
French secondhand cars are expensive. If you have an old banger as long as it has a MOT you can sell it for 1500 euros. You dont seem to be able to buy a second hand car more than 10 years old except privatly, and then they seem to think its made of gold. I think it may have something to do with the goverment, in the past , giving Euro3000, against a new car, to get the bangers of the road.
We tried to trade in a 15 year old VW polo estate 1600 in fair condition againt the x trail but the garage was not interested in even offering scrap value.

The 04MY onwards has the much improved interior with the 6 disc double din stereo high up and triple dial hvac controls as opposed to the 80's amstrad version!

Exterior wise 16" wheels and the cheese grater grille at the front and circular reflectors at the rear as opposed to rectangular.

Also you will have the troublesome common rail 136 dci engine.

There are several other under the skin changes but the 04on is the superior car, apart from the engine which can be a serious money pit.

Indeed. If you dont tow much or do a serious mileage, the petrol x-trail is the better choice. Hence why I have the 2.5 and 165bhp :)
