I've just ordered a CB to go in the truck, just the head unit, as have previously been using cheap PMRs, but found them to be poor. What is a good location to mount the unit ? Which is the best type of aerial mount to use ? Where is the best location for the aerial ? Any pics would be useful.

Sorry for all of the questions, Lee. :thumb2

There are many places where you can mount the CB but most peeps with T2's use the cubby hole infront of the gear sticks which is where mine is going soon. As for an aerial a springer type will be the best for off road use:thumb2 as for placing it on the roof is your best bet held in place by a large mag mount or fitted to a roof rack

Hello Sweety,

was thinking that very same thing, the cubby hole looks just right for a CB. I was thinking of mounting the aerial at the rear of the roof, on a quick release body mount, the push and turn BNC type. Any thoughts ?

so long as you have a good ground plane it doesn't really matter....centre of the roof is therefore optimum but since you are only likely to be using it in convoy or locally its not a problem..

Can you explain "ground plain" so i'll have a better idea where to drill the hole ? :nenau

ground plane is the surface at right angles to the aerial - don't ask me how it works but it forms part of the aerial setup (e.g. a mag-mount sat on the floor on its tod won't perform very well)....the best fitment is into the metal in its centre for best all round signal. Mr Google will tell you loads more but heres a sample of why its not that interesting....but it was when CB was illegal and great fun way back in the 70s! Especially when you had to have smaller less obvious aerials to avoid detection; you had to get maximum performance out of your 'twig'. 10-4?

Off-centre and mag mount is second best if truth be told, but as I said, if you aren't trying to talk to people from Poland the mag mount is absolutely fine....also means you can demount it to avoid tea-leaves....:)

Thanks for the info Mate, as you say, not the most interesting subject but I get the general idea.

Cheers Bud, Lee. :thumbs

I've ordered the aerial and mount today from Thunderpole. I've bought the 1.55m base loaded orbitor aerial with a 7" mag mount, so that I can put it in the middle of the roof as and when required. I'm going to put a fused cigarette lighter plug on the unit supply cable so that I can remove the whole set up in a few minutes. I don't want some light fingered so and so helping themselves.

I'll keep you posted, Lee. :thumbs

Good option - I mounted my bracket to a piece of MDF about 18" x 24" that sits on the passenger seat on a piece of memory foam when I'm out - lets me stick the laptop on it as well when I'm navigating for TW (which I seem to have got stuck with!). Lappy slips about a bit when its really rough but plan to screw a few battens to the MDF to hold it in place. Its a bit Fred Flintstone but at least you can remove the whole thing when you've done, let your passenger sit down and not have any holes in your dash....

By the way Lee, make sure the aerial whip is securely fixed into the base - the allen bolt isn't that good but at least make sure its nice and tight, especially when you're driving underneath the trees etc.. or might find it gets whipped out!!

I was thinking of having some sort of clip that I could bend the aerial over and into if in a covered area, or I'll just take it off when neccessary. I have seen the mag mounts stuck in the middle of bonnets before, presumeably for this very reason.

if its a good stainless steel tapered whip you'd be surprised at the abuse you can give it!
