Hi all

I have just replaced my Landrover Discovery 2 V8 with a Nissan Terrano LWB Sport 3.0Di
It's a second car/workhorse for us. We also have a 2013 Vogue Autobiography. I'm in Halifax, West Yorks.

So far, so good. I like the car, it seems to have personality and feels solid in a way the Landrover never did. I initially aimed to buy a Shogun, but I couldn't believe the price of the Terrano and the Patrol engine swayed me (especially after test driving Shoguns in the same price range). I do have a couple of queries though:

1: It's a little smokey on initial startup - but seems to run fine with no smoke. Valve stem seals? It also smells of paraffin/diesel when left running.

2: I seem to get quite a lot of engine noise through into the cabin (mostly coming from the footwell/trans tunnel) - Is this pretty normal? It's not an unhealthy noise - just a little more intrusive than I'd have expected.

3: Is there a source for aftermarket parts? Toys etc?

4: Front brakes are quite grabby and they tend to lock the front quite easily. Normal?

5: It'll be due some tyres soon, and I was thinking of something a little more rugged than the road tyres it has on. General Grabbers, or maybe some Insa Turbo Dakars. Anyone got any experience with these?

6: Is the handbrake a traditional handbrake or a transmission lock? Feels like the former to me.

7: Front tyres are wearing on the outside quicker than the rest. Does the car just have more positive camber naturally? It's on both fronts. Our old RR Sport used to do this too (but they were £250 a corner).

Check your glow plugs, after starting these should be on until the engine reaches >45 dg. C. Chances are you may have no working GP's! This will not be apparent on a direct injection engine until ambient temps are very cold.

2: I seem to get quite a lot of engine noise through into the cabin (mostly coming from the footwell/trans tunnel) - Is this pretty normal? It's not an unhealthy noise - just a little more intrusive than I'd have expected.
If heard while driving, check the front prop shaft UJ's, these are "sealed for life" and do fail.

3: Is there a source for aftermarket parts? Toys etc?

Calipers are probably due a good clean up, esp. the slide pins.

Operates drum brakes on rear wheels.

welcome to the club, don't know much about 3.0l but there's plenty on here that do. I'm sure you'l have your answers soon!

Could well be the glow plugs. It does turn over just a little more than I'd expect before firing - although I have nothing to compare it to, obviously.

I wouldn't say it was drive-train noise. It's almost like someones left a cover off, or some of the sound deadening has been removed. I'll get used to it I'm sure.

Looks like I'll have the callipers off for a nosey when it gets a bit warmer.

Welcome:thumb2 I can say the Terrano will be far cheaper for you to run as they don't need new parts every week:lol I'm onto my second Terrano now but in between them I also had a disco 2 V8 until the engine block went porous:doh TBH I feel the Terrano is a far better motor than the disco plus in 4 years of having Terrano's I've spent less on them inc tyres etc than I did in the first year of owning the disco.
As for the brakes the rear may need re-adjusting as the auto adjuster hardly ever work but it's dead easy to do & the hand brake works on the rear brakes & not the transmission like the disco. Oh don't use 4WD on the road as you'll get transmission wind up as there is no center diff on these trucks like the disco has

Welcome bud :thumb2 Can't help with the Terrano only bits but I do have the same engine in my Trol. I would say that the Trol with the 3.0 does sound quite agricultural but that's normal (I quite like it :D) imagine the Terrano is the same.

Intersting that the 3.0 Terrano has rear drums as all Y61 Trols except for the 4.8s have transmission handbrakes.

On the tyres, I've had General Grabber ATs on since getting the Trol in March 2013, done just over 20k and still a good load of tread, managed the business fine offroad - I even managed up a slope at an offroad site that the Defenders hadn't been able to get up due to the weather :sly

I have owned Terrano's for many years now and can't say I notice the cabin noise, you may notice it more on a Terrano than say, your vogue.
The front brakes on mine don't snatch, as has been said, check the calipers.

Oh hands down every time. My work colleague has a vogue and it's like a sofa on wheels with a hole in the petrol tank :lol

The terrano is like an agricultural tractor :lol

You'd be surprised. Ours is the 4.4 tdv8. It gets 35mpg on a run. It's quiet, comfy, and surprisingly swift when required. That said, I could buy more than 30 of my terrano for one of our RR.
 
Well, I've done a few days with the plucky little tractor and I like it more and more.

I have a oil light very now and then but I suspect dodgy switch supposedly fixed by dealer. I will check for oil tomorrow.

Had a little play I'm the snow tonight, but new insa Dakars have not arrived yet. Panicked a bit when I couldn't get the green 4wd light off, but some forward/reverse sorted that.

Yeah my colleague had the 4.4 its a rocket, and has some lovely gadgets.

Too pretty to enjoy offroad and too pretty to be intimidating on road (would be too scared to scratch it) :thumbs

Oil light problems on these usually result in the oil switch that sits down the drivers side of the engine, easy to do through the o/s front wheel area, there is a down load on here, showing how to do it.
 
Are there 2 switches? My oil light came on and I had the switch changed but it's still on :confused:
