Hello folks,
I've been seaching for a reliable 4x4 for a while, following a fairly extensive search I settled on a 2003 2.7TDI LWB Terrano.

so far so good but I have a few questions if anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated;)

Firslty I'm not sure exacly which engine I have, the only written indication I can find on the paperwork says its a TD however it has a bonnet vent and an intercooler underneath so surely its a TDI? if it is a TDI any ideas what they are like for reliability, maintenance, running costs etc

Secondly its done 78000 and I'm starting to think about timing belt changes etc but I have read on here that some of these dont have either a chain or belt, is it possible mine doesen't have either?

Lastly the rev counter and fuel gauge have stopped working so any ideas where to start with fixing these? seems like a coincidence that they have both stopped together so initially I'm thinking a bad connection in the back of the clock assembly.

A lot of questions I know! Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
All the best
John

Hi and welcome aboard.

First of all it's a TDI and has no timing belt or chain as it's gear driven:thumbs

If your unsure about it's service history at all get all the oils changed including the rear diff but make sure who ever does the diff uses genuine LSD Oil not gear oil with an additive.

May be an earth problem with the gauges?

Hi Jim,
thanks loads for your know how, good to know its a TDI. As for service history its been serviced every 9k there abouts but theres no mention of diff oil being changed so I'll certainly get onto that.

I'll check out the earth for the dials. Do you know if electrical problems fairly common with these?

all the best

Hi and welcome to the club mate :thumb2

I'm sure you'll be happy with your Terrano... the 2.7tdi is pretty damn solid, as long as you look after it and service it regular...if yours has been done every 9k should be a good start :thumb2 chaning oils, filters etc all simple DIY jobs for 99% of people and plenty of help and advise on here for anything your stuck with.

Regarding your rev counter and fuel gauge failing at the same time, look under the steering wheel to the right and you'll see the fuse box, I'd start here first (I would go and look in mine.... but its dark! :augie)
If it aint a fuse theres advice on this thread on how to remove the speedo to check your connections...

When I removed mine though it was cause the digi display went wonky!!!

Fingers crossed its something simple and a quick fix :thumb2 Did you buy from a dealer? You could get them to fix it....

welcome to the club, some good advice already, and for the cost id get those oils done when you can for peace of mind. Servicing at a garage wont be cheap due to the amount of oil required, gear box, lsd, diff etc but the oil itself isnt expensive and as others have stated, its all DIY stuff really. Make sure you use good quality fuel filters, air filters and oil filters is my advice, as strange things can happen if a filter doesnt seal right...!

Thanks very much too you all for such a warm welcome and excellent advice.

I'll have to leave my spanners in the tool box for a few more days at least, but will look forward to getting started in the new year.

All the best and a happy new year
John
