Hi,

a new noise is evident from the osf.

It sounds like something rubber, from near the steering box. Like a whump noise.

The local garage has checked over the car and cannot find any movement in anything. Tyres are new, balance and alignment done and new wheel bearings.

Its only heard if travelling no more than 40mph, it happens when turning left ie quarter of a turn, it has happened a few times when going in a straight line.

Ball joints and tie rod ends all ok.

only makes 4 whump noises each time we've heard it. Any speed above 40pmh its not heard due to road noise etc...

I'm stumped and so is the garage.

Any help appreciated.

What are the compression rod bushes like on the lower wishbone??
The cup washer that houses the bush has a tenancy to break off the chassis and can cause a clunk.
Also check the anti roll bar drop links:thumb2

Whump noises long shot ideas?

Not sure how standard your set up is but are things like mud flaps contacting the tyres or wheels catching the wheel arch?

Lastly have you changed the fluid in the steering box ever? If it's really old might be cavitation noises in the stystem?
If you do change it I always add the Lucas additative on older vehicles as the change from old thick fluid to nice fresh stuff can cause drips.
