New Noise!! 2.7TD Mav

Err dunno if this is a strange one or not?? The last couple of days there is a loud whining noise,gets louder with more acceleration. I'm presuming its turbo whine but how serious is it? Sometimes there sometimes not, 38 mile round trip this morning wasnt there for first 30 miles then very loud all of a sudden, then same trip this evening was there almost all the time!! Mav is running the same losing no power but something must be wrong..right?? Had a lot of niggly bits and pieces recently but have a feeling this could be a bit more serious..can anybody put my mind at rest?? lol.

Have you "fiddled" with your air filter recently? Oil changed? If so was it the right oil
Window open? What sort of revs when it happens.

mine made a real turbo whistle sort of noise that got worse and worse until the flexi section of the exhaust gave up completely, new exhaust no noise! often happens around 90k miles the flexi seems to go on the top (hard to see) side first. Milner do a good cheap replacement :thumb2

Its due a oil change, but put a new air filter in about 6 weeks ago when I also changed the fuel filter and cleaned mini filter. When its making the noise it happens when accelerating more but at steady speed is still there but not as noticeable!! When i was stationary a couple of times in neutral i increased revs to about 2000 and its there aswell. Is iding higher than normal around 900 ish I reckon.

She is on 135k now but had full new exhaust for MOT last september and all looks good, but wouldnt rule it out and is under warranty too!!

Worth checking the air box then make sure filter is in properly and box seals tight.
Check and clean MAF, check throttle position sensor and micro switch, give the pedal a pull upwards and see if revs fall back

if u have the td and not the tdi you might have a hand throttle which is not in the correct position which would make it rev higher at idle:nenau

my troll tdi sounds different every day!, always making new sounds.

adds to entertainment. good point aboout flexy in exhaust, thinking
back to december when it got tested got a warning for it.

some times does sound more throaty.

mind diesels are funny, they say hardly need back boxes but you know
about it if theres no exhaust or it comes loose up front.

note to self check this as could be link to check lights i get on full
throttle.

back on t2, on mind the turbo was very subtle hard to make it out
over visous fan....

If not any of the above then worst case scenario is the gearbox if it sounds like a washing machine

If the exhaust is leaking then try putting a rag over the exhaust outlet, with the engine running, you should feel the back pressure, or you will feel poor resistance and leaking noises.

Warning: Exhaust is hot and dirty so wear a glove or something.

I know what you mean, I thought I went deaf the other week, then I realised the Mother-in-Law was no longer in the car. :lol:lol:lol

good place to start then, take it back to the exhaust place and they can check it over, it could just be a loose joint. Then go through the other suggestions and do the simple / free things first. I had the wrong oil in mine recently and it caused all sorts of issues, check the 'what oil' thread started by Karinofnine.

id also check the I/C inlet/outlet hoses's and tighten.

Check your EGR VALVE PIPE that runs from the back of the turbo exhaust round the back against the bulk head to the other manifold too :thumb2

If, as you indicate, its also doing it in neutral when stationary, I'd be looking first at bearings in the alternator, water pump, power steering pump or aircon pump if you have a/c.

You might even try removing the belts quickly to see if the noise vanishes, if it does, theres your answer. :thumb2

Thanks for all the suggestions, took it back to exhaust place this morning and everything ok there!! Noise totally dissapeared today til I just nipped to chippy tonight and its back again. :nenau Gonna give the removing belt trick a go tomorrow but gotta be done when noise is happening, no air con so possibly water pump or alternator bearings as suggested. The EGR is behind the engine but what will I be looking for if thats the problem, it hasnt been blocked off yet!!

I have poured water onto the belts when they start squeeking and the noise stops instantly.

Comes back when they eventually dry out.
I have used WD40 on them, but some members don't rate this.
If you buy new belts, replace both. Keep the old ones in the truck in case.

Both of the decent garages I've used have used the WD40 trick....its only a one-off diagnostic thing so I don't see how it can cause any damage or problems????? After all, contrary to what many people think, WD40 only has a tiny amount of oil in it.......

Ok Guys been out to Mav this morning and pretty sure the noise is water pump!! belts seem ok. got my son to rev it whilst i listened and deffinately at front and deffinately not alternator as noise is central ish but I know noises can be deceptive. Been using a bit of water recently so maybe been leaking a while? Right also had to top brake fluid up so had it on ramps and has a leak on the flexi that joins the two rear brake pipes in the middle!! Any idea where i might purchase this apart from Frauds and what it is called, it joins the two rear pipes via a square junction piece , I presume its a single unit?
