hmmm...ok then...what about engine breaking.....?

I guess there wil be more engine braking with the oil burner but in low ratio I never had a problem.
I found the rev range more useful off road with the petrol though, sometimes you change gear on a steep hill for example (off road) and loose momentum with the diesel but you an rev te nuts off the petrol:sly
Power is about the same on both at 120 petrol and 123 TDi but deisl has more torque.
I went deisel this time cause I'm going to tune it a bit and that is cheaper on diesel.:thumbs

123bhp TDi but deisel has more torque. very usefull when towing a caravan too.

'tis funny, buying a diesel is more awkward! i am seeing loads of petrols, not so many diesels...ah well! keep looking...

true.

but the diesel can be chiped easyer to get 145bhp and a bit more with K&N air fillter intercooler fan. ect...

ahhh..now this sort of info actually helps my decision. wading through water isnt something i had immediatly thought of, but its bound to happen during my ownership...cant you fit a snorkal to petrol engines, or am i being silly?

i cant spell either!

you can fit a snorkel to anything but petrol engines dont like water

some say
they dont like going from hot to cold quick
they dont like the strain of pushing all that water in front of them
petrols run hotter than diesels

but without any of them petrol's run off a spark and water tends to stop the sparking , so they stop mid river and you cant re start a submerged truck

not many off roaders are petrol's..... although some do just for the power but they rarely go near water

thanks extreme, thats makes sense what you say. although i wont be serious offroading for quite some time (as i am new to it all, not done much off road yet) i must still consider i will hit deep water at some point, and i need to rely on the engine to keep going, as my expericene is poor right now. so diesel it is. shame, i saw a petrol one on ebay £1k, nice.

cool id have one in an instant.... trouble is i still like the look of the defender but the disco has the comfort ..... but the defender does it for me ....... unless your unloading stupid money but even then id still concider the defender ...... just cos its a proper land rover without all the stuff to break

i sold my one 3 years ago cos we did'nt get away enough to warrant keeping it or the van, things have changed now, i would love a defender but the wife dont like them, so it's a disco again but thats no problem, im looking at one tomorrow, 1994 and one owner, fully loaded, i'll let you know how i get on.:thumbs

ok, heres a question, newbie question.

I am aware that SWB is the way to go for offroading BUT, clearly LWBs are used off road too SO, how much is there in it? I understand that clambering up short hills is better in an swb, but that doesnt mean lwb's cant follow?

I ask because I need to decide if an LWb will be just as good. Addmittedly i woudl struggle for space on my drive, but at least i could consider it based on the ability of the lwb...

oh, and for inof, the type of off roading i intend to do is light-were talking fun days out on beginners courses at first, moving onto intermediate after a while... All other times the truck will be used as a regular vehicle for holidays, going to work, taking stuff to the skip and so on...

so SWB is my first choice, but let me know your opinions on LWBs

cheers big ears's

Bit more overhang at rear but i have been ll over with this club and apart from towball never had any major problems,so now take it off and fasten sockets underneath 10 min job.JD
