How long is reasonable to wait for a brand new car to come into stock at a dealership when you have ordered it?

Build Date

When you ordered the car there will have been something in the terms and conditions when you placed your order telling you when to expect delivery and the deposit rufund / cancellation details.

Many dealers pre-order models with a build date the following month and when a customer places his order this one is varied to meet the customers specification. Depending which country the vehicle is being built in will affect this date. Some popular models have waiting lists of several months. Also there is a cut off date for varying a pre-order and if you miss that by a day it will cost a month on the timeline.

I would have thought that if you placed an order say today if its not too late for the cut off point a specific build date in May is realistic for most franchises. Delivery from somwhere like Germany is about three weeks after the build date.If your order is very individual dates can easily slip back a month or even two due to material shortages etc.

Just managed to get some information from the dealer but not an eta. Its on a ship coming across from Germany. Once landed it will have to wait for a transport order and then and only then the transport company have 14 days to deliver it to dealer. Then the dealer has to pdi and fit my bits n pieces to it. So my guesstimate is another 3 weeks at least. So looks like ill get an admin charge from my insurance company as its due for renewal shortly and who knows may be even another months ta direct debit.

Never used to take so long to buy a new car, its been an eye opener:doh

Not sure about the UK, but waiting times here in Belgium are measured in months. Back in the time when I had company cars, I had a 4 month wait for a VW Golf, a 3 month wait for a Skoda Superb. I know of one colleague, 2 years ago, who waited 11 months for an Audi A4...

I take it it's a brand new motor then Jim:nenau if so it can take a few weeks to get into the country then it'll have to be shipped to the dealer where it will then have to go through a full PDI check, valet & be registered with the DVLA before you get it but once at the dealer they should only have is for a week-10 days:augie

Yeah Sweety, how the trade has changed since I worked in it. Shame they dont tell you the time scale when you are buying. Just a shame that the insurance iis due in a couple of weeks and knowing my luck itll end up being another direct debit for the road tax. Still itll be nice when it finally lands.

It took over 3 months for my Mam's old Mondeo to come into the country but that was due to Ford messing around & not wanting to build the car but they did once my Mam got in touch with them direct & let rip:lol I know when I worked for Rover we could often get cars sent up from the factory within 3-4 days if they were needed quickly otherwise it was often a week, all of the PDI etc was done one day & the valeters got it the next day. Can remember the weeks running upto August the 1st I would be doing 15-25 PDI's a day:doh

wait till you ever get the chance to buy a brand new GTR skyline.

rolling body gets assembled, then it's shipped in white to nissan's nizmo factory, where it's custom body work is fitted, then painted and detailed, then the engine is built to spec along with suspension and wheels and tyres, then it's tuned and tested then there is six weeks of shipping alone followed by another 3 weeks in customs (if all is well) duty,GST taxes etc, then it goes to VINZ to be checked over then issued a new zealand VIN number then it's shipped to dealer, issued registration plates and Warrant of fitness.

If i had know i would have gone to Japan brought the car lived there for six months then shipped it home with me....would have been quicker and cheaper.

I would have thought if delivery is taking longer than expected the dealer would loan you a car / demonstrator until it arrives as a goodwill gesture.

PDI, valet and registration.

On the cheerful side the dealership where I work can do the PDI & valet in under a day.
The registration for the majority of dealers is now done via computer on a system they call AFRIL the new car is registered and taxed this way without the need for the V55 new vehicle registration document.

If you put a cherished number on at the time of first registration you can't use AFRIL and have to send the V55 to DVLA Swansea so it takes an extra couple of days. The Government have closed the LVLO offices to save money - at our dealership we get round this problem by always registering the vehicle via AFRIL so the car is delivered on a new plate and we assign the cherished number after the new log book (V5) arrives with the customer some 2-4 weeks after registration.

Ive only bought one once before and that was 1991 mk2 astra it was ace.

Maybe im being impatient or something but i know when i worked for dealerships it never took so long.

Anyhoo Ill try and forget about it and see how it goes for the next couple of weeks.

Snap - I have only ever bought one new car when I was in CID because you could get a cheap loan as an essential car user - it was a 1984 Astra 1600 SR 2 door (could not afford GTE)in Metallic Gold with Black lower skirt section loved the car but have always bought used since then.

Skoda are doing a special offer on Roomsters so for the price of a 2 to 3 year old plus a little more weve got a new one. All being well it should reduce my costs a heck of a lot too.

Ill still have the old Terrano but the 05 plate is going, made me sick getting rid and the px value but we will be better off in the long run.

When you ordered the car did they sell you any Gap Insurance ?

I took some out when we bought the 300C as its probably the last expensive car we will ever buy. The salesman convinced me it was a worthwhile product but his price was too high he wanted £250 ish for 3 year cover. I went online and got better 3 year cover - return to invoice in full for a one off premium of £83.70 from a company I found via Which Magazine.

Yeah got the gap ins, to be fair i talked them down and got that for about £120 so not too bad really.

Itll arrive when it arrives all being well not be too long.
