Advice please guys. I'm trying to buy a car from Cyprus and get it shipped back here. Does anyone have any advice on legalities involved etc. Especially regarding rip offs scam mongering etc.
The guy "seems" very genuine , he's a Doctor and about 70 years old. I'm thinking of going out on cheap seats etc to do the deal , but how do I know it doesn't go walk about when I go home again?
Also does anyone know of any companies doing car transporting ?:bow

Many expats import cars into Cyprus, and permanent residents of Cyprus who are not Cypriots and are not employed (or planning to work) are entitled to purchase one duty-free car. When selling a vehicle in Cyprus that was imported with an excise duty and VAT waiver, the seller (or buyer) must pay duty and VAT on the value of the vehicle if it is sold within 10 years of import. The duty and VAT are calculated on the value of the vehicle when it was imported, minus yearly depreciation. This obviously depends whether the vehicle was imported or is a genuine cypriot bought car and is the only potential pitfall I can think of.

There is then the cost of shipping and any excise duty when entering the UK. Then there's registering it http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/DG_4022583

A popular idea with expats in Cyprus is putting vehicles in storage in bonded warehouses for part of the year to avoid paying duty on them. Could be a good idea to stop it going walkabout after paying for it! Not too expensive either apparently. You will have to get it there though so will need to arrange transport unless you intend on registering and insuring the car so you can drive it.

Try these guys for advice and maybe handling it for you http://www.britmovers.com/index.html

Good info thanks. \The car is a 1974 cortina in what seems stunning condition. I like the bonded warehouse idea :thumbs
I'm now thinking about a cheap flight over to do the deal :D

A mate of mine (One i know, not a friend of a friend) had his car stolen and found it in Cyprus, took ages to get it back. Interpol had to sort it out in the end.

I know its not really what your asking, but i though it was intresting, :lol

It was re-registered over there, but i know he drove it back here without too much hassel.

I did think about driving it back till I did a route and the 2800 miles put me off a bit, but the final straw was the amount of fuel was pretty much the same as putting it on a ship.:doh

drag it back on a trailer great excuse for a road trip:thumbs

MOM 720 P, that was my dads Mk3 Cortina, it was chocolate "Matalic" Brown, it had the twin head lights, i think it was a GLX but not sure. He always had Cortinas, right up till the Sierra took over. he wounl not have one of them so got a Fiat (Oh the shame)

I had a sierra 2.8 xr4, the rear wheel drive one , not 4x4 . I had the back end rebuilt so many times as it was the most tail happy car I've ever had:eek:
Luckily it was a company car :lol
Had the 4x4 version after that and that was fun, esp round here on the lanes :naughty

It's deal I want to do but would be brilliant if your mate could check it out, just to make sure it's real. Maybe oversee the move from seller to shippers maybe
