guys why not get them on your network, wifi or ethernet cable,

then set up so can access hdds from each other, could pull programs
over in raw format though cant copy installed progs.

reckon a portable dvd drive, mind ive got a mains powered one too
if just put all stuff on at home.

think another way is to download from net the progs or data, subject
to having a licence for the prog, and a decent download speed.

I'll cough, ive got a portable cd drive, i think its in the loft somewhere, but its just not convenient :augie

As for the network, yes Ive done it that way. Got one of the newer Asus routers with two hdds tagged onto it that are hidden behind the tele :D As soon as youre on the network you can get onto them. For some reason though that seems to be a very very slow way of doing it. By the time one of the machines has started loading across as often as not I could have got the memory stick and done the biz.

However I also like to keep the machines "clean" ie the minimum number of things running automatically and the least number of access granted and that does make linking together a bit more difficult :D just my way, a bit of paranoid security :naughty

Been that way ever since I had a demo of how easy it is to break into an allegedly secure machine :thumb2

Frightening. We also had a bulletin around at work about an attack on ours (amongst other) networks that used the up to date version of key logging/bot. You didnt have to be stupid to get caught out by it :sly

On a lighter note, my son was convinced he had his computer secure, I hacked it and made it put messages up on screen , move the mouse around, take over during games etc etc He wondered if it was haunted :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol (and I did that from my pda!!!)

a slight change of subject, but i bought the Mrs a brilliant new memory stick from staples the other day, made by HP 2gb for £5.49 - but it's only about 1/2 long! which is brilliant as she uses it in the car stereo and keeps hitting the normal sized ones when she changes gear.

Change the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not cheap, well on way to new pc

might be cheaper on line, ebay etc

I may be preaching to the converted here, but just be aware that if you buy the upgrade and you have any of the mainstream MS progs on your computer that are shall we say borrowed, it may not play and youll end up on the phone to MS.

Thats because theres lots of suspicious batches of product keys around and if the pick up on one :thumb2

Ive got a toshiba laptop and an acer netbook both go everywhere with me depending which she wants leaving at home and im all over europe with my job THEY HAVE BOTH served me well, i just have an external hd for music films etc.

err pay attention, the dell i mentioned is same price, and a bigger hdd, better build
though fear customer service is off shore, lets leave it there.

after that theres couple of acers, with the 250gb hdd.

now lots of folks recommending acer in general, indeed was seriously looking at
a high spec acer laptop, quad core!, lots of bling!, but current budget points to
a netbook.

A couple of things to update this:

1. DELL - their service is actually about as good as it gets, despite the stories you see...they are the worlds No.1/2 (depends how you look at it) manufacturer so of course you will hear more 'stories'. But the fact is they have the largest 'self help' facility on the net (something in excess of 50,000 pages of FAQs and help I believe) and their on-site maintenance is done by a major hardware break/fix provider to fairly tight service levels. And at the end of the day, despite what you might think, virtually all PC manufacturers buy their bits from the same sources.

Sure their software service is offshore, but its also extremely competent. But if you are not computer-savvy then you might struggle, thats normal. I worked in IT for 20+ and met every kind of tw@t user you can imagine, I know what goes on LOL

2. Vis-a-vis the mention of the joke iPad, just been reading reviews today in the Sunday Times of the new HP tablet which apparently stomps the iPad on just about every front....not difficult I know, but worth a Google :thumb2:lol

Couple of folk in our office have gone for one of the samsungs on android. The local iphone disciple gave it the old "well my iphone can do this" every answer from the samsung users was "yes we can too" Then they compared costs and lets just say samsung users won significantly :D:D:D:D:D
