how big does the hard drive need to be on a net book :nenau

the only thing that has put me off buying one is the lack of CD/DVD input and the tiny little keyboard.

keyboard on a 10"er is typically quoted as 92% of full size.

can get an external dvd rom or rewriter that only powers
off the usb for £20-40

hdd fair point, but suspect way of world, everything bigger
wether needed or not.

current lappy from 2004 on xp and pentium4, yep gets warm
has a 60gb hdd.

suppose really battery life on a netbook could be improved if
ditch traditional hdd for a solid state variety, less likely to
suffer bumps and bangs. think 64gb s/s hdd around £80
so bumping price up.

Im sitting here typing this out on a fujitsu laptop which is excllent quality and at work I have an HP also bang on. The fujitsu gets thrown in the caravan and been dropped several times The HP has been hauled around the country over the last 3 years used and abused Both are still going strong :thumb2

We also have (just one !!) and acer laptop in the dept. A neighbour had an acer desktop. They were my only experience of acer and were/are both crap. The desktop was a real British Leyland Monday morning job never worked properly. Currys replaced it in the end with an HP :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

The laptop has ran well but has not really stood up to long term robust handling, sticky keys, creaky case and a few dead pixels :(

Its now relegated to use as a desktop with a monitor and keyboard plugged into it...................because a docking station wasnt available :doh

However theyre still trading so there must be some good uns out there. Choose carefully mate :thumbs

If you look they are usuallu running W7 Starter? would Home Premium be better or doesn't it make much difference. I've not had anything to do with em but I too have seen the Dell for £199 and it's tempting.

Jim

well some stores offer an upgrade to home prem if bought with a win7 starter
machine think argos, half price at 40, john lewis was less maybe £20, but a
techy pal says dont bother as overkill on rest of a net book's spec.

possible to keep adding upgrades til point might as well buy a regular laptop.

seen 13.3" with a dvd rw built in, bigger processor and home premium from £300

go go go ..................

one thing Deb misses big time on her netbook is a cd or dvd player. The number of times she's had to nick my memory stick and computer to load stuff across :doh (or more correctly i have to lol)

yes, that is my concern with them, foe example i do a lot of typing and use a few different word processor packages that i am happy with (all have slightly different features. How do you load this stuff with no cd/dvd? and if you buy an external one you have to start thinking about just buying a full sized laptop in the first place.

I didn't realise the keyborads were so close to full size though

Just spotted this thread and need to hijack it a bit :augie
I've been looking for a 7" touch pad thing for in the truck mainly. It's to have the sat nav on it, MM, mp3 etc
Given what's been said here, is there a slave type screen I could get that links to a laptop while in the car perhaps?

I have a 4 gig memory stick, i have to transfer a cd or bits from a dvd via my laptop or desktop onto it then use the memory stick as an external drive on the netbook. Its a pain , it hasnt failed yet but i reckon if it was a protected cd or non downloaded prog id come unstuck.

Win 7 basic on the netbook has been pretty reliable and Deb hasnt reached the "wish i had pro cos i cant do this that and the other" point ..yet.

Office 2007 and norton AV runs fine on it.

SOME of the keyboards are about 100% laptop size , some are not (or were not when we were shopping for one).

i had two quite high specd laptops of dell the hd broke, the keyboards broke, the screen broke (stopped working not damaged) the hd broke again only saving grace was onsite warranty wont touch dell again,hp both good as gold!

a slight change of subject, but i bought the Mrs a brilliant new memory stick from staples the other day, made by HP 2gb for £5.49 - but it's only about 1/2 long! which is brilliant as she uses it in the car stereo and keeps hitting the normal sized ones when she changes gear.

hp both good as gold!

hp seem to be coming out of this thread quite well :nenau

I would add i have an HP pda and thats been drowned, generally sacked about ad apart from a (minor) problem with the backup battery is still going strong 5 years after i bought it second hand :thumbs

guys why not get them on your network, wifi or ethernet cable,

then set up so can access hdds from each other, could pull programs
over in raw format though cant copy installed progs.

reckon a portable dvd drive, mind ive got a mains powered one too
if just put all stuff on at home.

think another way is to download from net the progs or data, subject
to having a licence for the prog, and a decent download speed.

Well I was thinking about one as an extra machine so size and lack of optical wouldn't worry me at all. Dead easy to share an optical drive on another machine and use through the network but another way of looking at it would be exactly how often you would need an optical drive?

IMHO Dell's are the best quality laptops that I've dealt with at work. Not sure about Lenovo's as I've not had anything to do with those products since IBM sold that business to the chinese. I now have a Samsung lappy for work and I really don't think it's gonna last the 3 year warranty period.

Not had the inclination to check the differences between W7 Starter and Home Edition's, I also am not a fan of Win7 or the later Office versions either. I know lot's of people will shout me down on that but I just think Microsoft introduced change for changes sake.

I think it's also checking on the amount of USB ports too, I think two is too few. 3 has to be a minimum. Had a call from someone on here last week who only had two, one of them broke and took out the second too.

Still think it was change for changes sake!!! just to make more money but then again they're not a charity are they. I also hate change!!!!

I liked the step from W98 to XP, thought that was a good use of new ideas. Vista as we all knew was pants. To me Win 7 is Vista with bugs taken out but still isn't likeable. Trouble is after 2014 we'll be forced to use Win 7 or what ever is out by then. Chances are XP will be made harder to stick with before then too. Come back paper and pencil's:clap

Imagine having such opinions and I work in IT:doh:lol:eek::clap:thumb2

did read prob on microsoft site whilst struggling to get my xp back upto sp3
that xp cant be sold anymore on new machines.

and of course flogging home prem as an upgrade.

jim like the it comment, same here working in electrical retail, personal is if not
