Hi All

Managed to get some roof rails for the 1998 SWB 2.7TD Maverick.

They should add a bit of bling to the vehicle.

Need to get my hands under the roof lining in places to attach some holding nuts.

Anyone know what I have to remove to do this.

Regards

GH

You do not want to be taking the head lining down, roof rails are fitted from the top, drill a 12mm hole through the roof the the correct size into the roof support beam insert the special expanding nuts (forget their name) use the correct spacer to sit on the nut so it is flush with roof, point is the beam has to take the load not the roof, Rick

Careful how far you drill through the roof too as I pierced the headlining with a drill bit:doh

As said rivnuts are the normal way of fitting.

Thanks for the info good to have people who have been there done that.

Is it safe to assume that the roof support beams are situated at both door pillars and the rear upright?
Second, how far is too far when drilling? :doh

Have a look at a pic of any SWB with roof rails and you will see the mount points only two for each rail on a SWB, as for depth once through the roof there is a 10 to 15 mm gap before hitting the support, once you drill through this (with the correct size for the Rivnut ) you have 15 to 20mm before the roof lining, the hole in the roof needs to be sized to accept the spacers you are using with a good fit to stop lateral movement, Rick

Apologies Rick, I should have made it clear that it's for my LWB. This photo stolen from another thread shows the areas I mentioned.

Yet this one seems to have different mounting points, which all seems a bit odd.

Especially as a rooftent on the rear section is going to be at least 50kg plus my slender 95kgs.

The handsome looking silver truck:naughtyhas roof rails fixed through the roof.
The other truck doesn't have the roof rails but attach using the supplied fittings with the rack. So when you take it off, there's nowt left on the roof :thumb2

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but it's a damned fine looking truck. I'm looking at the drilling points of both the rails and the rack in the second image as they seem to be different and the second appears to bolt on to the roof with no support (which is worrying).
