Well I nearly wiped another vehicle out today.....
Approaching a traffic island, traveling really slow because of the icy roads, sun out putting a nice sheen to the road surface.....no bull I was going really slow, other vehicles emerging from right and I am gently braking, my vehicle lost all traction and started sliding to wards the give way line...back end breaking away swinging right..... and straight for a vehicle that had just entered the island on my right ...it's at this point human nature has got to be ignored :sly I just hit the gas accelerated immediately regained control and shot in front of the vehicle that was already on the traffic island..:clap I then acknowledged the irate driver sounding his horn at me. :bow

purely for info just in case your inexperience wants you to hold on to your brakes.

Not as such just held my hand in the air acknowledging it was my doing no one else to blame.

glad to hear you was able to reagin control as it could have ended badly for the both of you

as always every one take care on the roads as the current conditions may take you by suprise

well done man, good quick thinking. to hell with the irate nob, he wouldnt have been so irate if he opened his eyes and became more aware of whats going on around him. tit.

stuck my T2 in someone's front garden Thursday night, driving along (in 2wd) minding my own business, next thing you know I'm going sideways. No traffic and nice big verges either side so I didn't even try to fight it. Straight up onto the verge, round in a circle, back on the road and away. Went back past in daylight and realised why the verge was so wide. Oops.

Landscape gardener require in Cromer ???

A bloke by me kindly stuffed his rangie sport into a garden a few doors away after side swiping their brick wall.....oooops:augie

I am pleased you were able to get out of that one.
Perhaps we need to compile a list of similar incidents and what tyres we are using, whether you were in 4 wheel drive at the time.

As I have said before I engage my auto hubs then slip in and out of 4 wheel drive as conditions change. On risky roundabouts or down hill sections I select 4H and use engine braking, very rarely use the brakes and have had no problems today from Staffordshire up through Cheshire on icy side roads, then back along the M6 at 70mph.
My tyres are Avon Rangers 235/75 R15 M&S tyres and these have the fine tread lines found on winter tyres they have been very good.

Much better than the Cooper discoverer tyres.

I find that braking in a straight line in 4 wheel drive does lessen the back end from trying to overtake the front.

Try it on quiet side roads you will be surprised.

To be fair you could have the biggest chunkiest tyres, or half bald road biased ones.... if you hit sheet ice neither are gonna grab any good!!!

I had a simular incident in last years big freeze, engine ticking over in 2nd, no feet on pedels bit of a camber and car started sliding sideways!!!
I was in 2WD and found putting it quickly into 4WD and resisting any tempation to hit the brakes brought it back under control!!!
Luckly the road was nice and wide!

People I speak to say, well your in a 4WD, you should have no problems - they dont seem to think something weighing almost 2ton cant slide down a hill!!!!

Playing in the snow is FUN... ice... well, thats different!!!

Crunched the firm's 110 pick up while towing today, broke out on sheet ice on a corner returning from delivering logs and went into the side of an artic :doh Tyres were Insa Dakars

oh, dear! but mud tyres are crap on the road! and worse in ice.

um , quiite simply do not break at all on ice, use your gears to slow down... otherwise you tend to come a cropper

glad you are ok!!!

Let me see now....approaching a traffic island, observing all other traffic flow AND DRIVING AN AUTOMATIC...smart arse so how do I not brake :augie
