Driving home from the school run this morning, all country lanes, and just after I turned left at a junction, the rear N/S wheel locked solid! Luckily, just past a layby. The handbrake was being pulled down, so I guessed a brake problem. Fortunately, I could reverse ok, but as soon as I tried driving forwards, it locked again. Something has collapsed in the brake mechanism. I'm guessing a shoe retaining spring has broken.
My local garage, one of those brilliant little country garages that can do anything for you, are going to retreive it this morning and sort it. The Terrano is only a ten minute drive away luckily.
Anyone had this happen?
Mike.

Not myself but Rick was kind enough to renew my rear brake cylinders and shoes as I had one leaking. The job was fairly quick (although Rick is very competent) it should not take too long labour wise. :thumbs

Could be a brake lining has broken off & is jamming the drum a few have had this problem:augie

Could be, I'm just glad it didn't happen on the motorway at 70. Would have been a lot of smoke from my nice new rear tyre, and a lot more damage!
I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

True, but to be fair, it probably only did it because you braked, rather than when you were just travelling along, so probably less likely on the motorway. Worst would have been on a fast country lane, where you dabbed the brakes to set the car up, just as you entered a fast corner.

The Handbrake is usually what causes this to happen, as it often sticks to the drum slightly over night, and the first time you pull away in the morning, jars all the rivets, as it shears free. Over time, this can be enough to start to break them.

Mine did this on the Maverick and it turns out that one of the retaining springs had sheared and caused the shoe to fall off in turn jamming the hub dead, cost me 65p to fix but when you've been through it and the wheel locks up it feels ever so much more expensive

Something similar happened to mine and it was the handbrake cable after where it splits into two.

I'm still running without a handbrake cable until I can be arsed to put the new cable on.

No, I was travelling, I suspect a broken shoe retaining spring. We will see tomorrow. Anyway, there is plenty of braking on a motorway!

I had this happen on a corner to the offside rear, tapped the brakes and just locked up, I was able to reverse and carry on but I could feel it dragging but only a few miles from home, mine turned out to be a delaminated brake shoe.

DELAMINATED BRAKE SHOE! CORRECT. That is exactly what it was. Should never happen, I guess the quality of spares is not what it used to be. Plenty of meat on the lining too, not as if it was almost worn away. Oh well, had a leaking wheel cylinder on the other side too, so a nice new set of shoes, a couple of wheel cylinders, ( might as well) and they will be sorted for a long time.

Result, and not too costly a job to fix, in comparison to what it could have been.

Don't suppose you know what make the old ones were? Might be worth naming and shaming, so we all know to stay away from them.

Glad it wasn't anything major:thumb2 as you've replaced both wheel cylinders they should last you quiet a few years to come & the same with your new brake shoes:D

No, unfortunately I don't know the brand. It's very rare, so perhaps I should do the lottery!.

Mine failed in exactly the same way with loads of meat left on them and they were Bosch which I think may be the original equipment suppliers?

I wonder how many times this happens? It's a scandal really, a real safety issue. I wonder if they were counterfeit ? So much stuff is made in Eastern Europe these days, but who checks the quality?

Iv'e just Googled 'brake lining delamination'. What a surprise, not as rare as you might think. Linings used to be riveted on, now they are glued, but it's not as good.

I think your prob looking too far into it, just bad luck that it stuck on I would have thought. Most dealers will have a reputable source for stock, wether it be genuine or non.

I remember you could buy just the linings, with a pack of rivets.

To fit... Place a suitable bolt in the vice to rest on the rivet head, then we used an old countersink bit to peen over the rivet. Sorted...
